4th slipping away, hoping Leeds can get a draw at least then we must beat arsenal, can’t see it happening.

  • Niall D says:

    Good result today
Is it possible, just possible, that Chelsea, could fail and fall to 5th leaving Spurs, and Arse 3rd and 4th, if only, mathematically possible.
All we can do is, win our games, let the others run their race.
But I enjoyed the game today, for me a better 2nd half, the usual suspects came on late as subs, and of course they scored, due to poor marking.
With that said we won and won well.
Can we beat Liverpool, of course we can, but they do get the bounce of the ball and old Mane and Salah are fond of a dive or two.
Can Leeds beat Arse, on their day certainly, Arse, are due a loss so let’s, see it at the weekend, they eeked out a few, results lately, they’ve ridden their luck in a few games, here’s hoping they are at the start of a three or 4 game losing streak.

  • Geofspurs says:

Forget all the emotion and hopeful aspirations, and let’s be honest. This season was supposed to be one during which we set up the team for next season. It was expected to be the season where we would lose players we did not want and bring in the players the team needed to be more competitive; the season where we would progress under the leadership of the right manager. We did improve the squad slightly during the last Transfer Window but three different managers as the season progressed made sure we would never achieve the consistency on the park that was vital.

So now we are back to square one and next season we will revisit the previous aspirations as our roller-coaster ride continues. Given this, when it comes to a top four finish, my heart and my head are in conflict. Although my heart longs for the glory that the Champions league can deliver my head believes we are not ready for the challenge. I believe we have a far greater chance of progressing through the group stage in the Europa League than we do in the CL. It is because of this that I feel losing out on fourth place could well be a blessing in disguise.

    Just thinking!

  • Allan says:

    Absolutely Geoff
4th is not the Holy Grail at present but next year . Conte is delighted with the progress the team has made since his arrival and to achieve 4th would be brilliant and would have been beyond even the most fervent supporters dreams when he arrived .
However , we do need to let several players go to not only generate funds for new players but to replace with better quality .
It is not my problem where we get the funds to improve the team from but Levy is able to be a successful property developer so why not put this ability into building a team with a manager who could possibly bring the club some success on the pitch .
More on the match later but a good win .

Geofspurs – while I understand what you are saying I don’t believe we are back to square one. Romero, Bentacur and Kulusevski have all strengthened the squad. The fact Conte has dismissed the PSG speculation suggests he will be here next season. I’d say we are on step two or three. Conte will drill the players in the summer, hopefully the squad will be strengthened and we should start next season stronger than we finish this one. There is no point in progressing in the Europa, its an all or nothing competition where either you win or it just weakens your league campaign. Not only will we earn more simply by qualifying for the champions league but the extra prestige will make signing players easier.

    • Love totty says:

I agree Jod, getting 4th will accelerate our development even if we don’t get through the group stage. Then of course we may drop into the EL.

  • PompeyYid says:

How come Romero isn’t mentioned in your MOM boxes? thought he was sublime, best player on the pitch. COYS

  • Love totty says:

    He was immense PY.

  • Niall D says:

    Morning Geoff,
For me that’s exactly where we are
I look at who we have brought in this season, by and large we are improving, but it is obvious that we do need to strengthen, both in certain positions (we all know which ones by now) but also generally throughout the squad, to allow us to change up the game or rest certain players.
Just like you I wasn’t expecting top 4, but I will take it.
And agree it’s not the “Holy Grail”.
Strangely for the second thread, I find myself agreeing with Jod, as in, playing CL football can and will make us a better prospect.
Unlike Jod, I would still welcome the Europa League, as a stepping stone next season, with that said it is a long draining competition.
With reference to our loanees, most are doing well in their “surrogate” clubs and many have been in the latter stages in Euro competitions and domestic Cup finals, so they should still fetch a fair price if sold.
So for me, if Conte stays, we are nowhere near back to square one, sa Jod says we are on step two or three, but it’s where we finish in the league and whom we recruit and dismiss over the Summer which will set out our stall for next season.
But agreed it is a bit of a false dawn (perhaps) just now, but I’ll take 4th and suffer the consequences.
    COYS.

  • jod says:

Niall D – The Europa isn’t really a stepping stone to anywhere unless you win it. It’s more a way of ensuring the second tier clubs play just as much football as the top teams so no one can do a Leicester and win the league by playing less football. It doesn’t make your club more attractive to players who want to play in the champions league and doesn’t generate the extra cash to recruit them. After a season in the Europa you are normally in exactly the same position as you started from, we did it for years.

  • Geofspurs says:

jod …. We were also in the CL for years but, for a number of reasons, we failed to build on it and we failed to kep it going. That has to be the GOAL.

  • jod says:

Geofspurs – The champions league gives you the opportunity, what you make of it is down to you. The Europa doesn’t give you the opportunity, that’s the point. Progress can only start with champions league qualification not being “in Europe”.

  • Geofspurs says:

jod …. I wasn’t arguing with you, just pointing out that we need to be competitive at the right level when we qualify for the CL. Just as we were under MP. We did not win it but we played some sublime football both domestically and in Europe. I want us to play like that agian. I guess we all do. If we can reach that level of performance again we will be capable of winning any compettion …. which, of course, does not guarantee winning anything.
For me, it is all about the way we play and trophies are a sweet bonus.

  • 123spurs says:

We need to start winning trophies.

  • jod says:

Geofspurs – But we don’t need to be competitive. Even if we don’t win a match we generate cash and attract players during the previous summer. Which means regardless of what then happens in Europe our league campaign that season starts in a better place and our chances of getting top four again improve. Its a virtuous circle, there’s a reason Wenger described top four as the equivalent of a trophy.

  • Niall D says:

Currently I’ll be happy enough if we win our next 4 games.
I’ll worry about trophies next season.
Jod I do take where you’re coming from, and indeed predicted a fall in league form for both Leicester and indeed W/Ham, with that said, they are both still in the discussion for a trophy this season, which is more than we can say at the moment.
But to finish 5th is showing intent to improve on our position last season.
Do I want Tuesday/Wednesday nite football at our team next season, certainly, but I will enjoy Thursday nite football if that’s what we get.
I do agree that it can be a “sapping” competition, hence the reason for strengthening the squad which would allow us to rest players and we could play WW ‘S much needed academy players.
Agreed Im not fond of going to some country ending in “Stan” on a Thursday in November.
In short I still see 5th as better than 7th, but take your point.

    • Love totty says:

I don’t get how winning the EL gets you nowhere. It gets you a trophy which would get a monkey off our backs in the short term at least. But nevertheless I wouldn’t swop 4th place and CL qualification for that trophy but that is semantics as they are not mutually exclusive, just hard to do in the same season.

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

If you win your Europa League group you play no more matches than in The Champions League. Whatever the pros and cons of the competition it is where we will be next season so we better start planning for it.

  • TK says:

The way to attract the best players and thus improve the team is to be in the CL.

How many top players would be attracted because we’re in the European Second Tier Cup? aka the EL, for European Losers.

As to having a monkey on our backs: What’s t the problem? I have a troop of marmosets that come through the trees on the back side my land every afternoon. I would not want to be rid of them.

Plenty of space to bury Arsenal under the trees so the monkeys that piss on their grave as they pass. A piss on the pass for the Gooners under the monkeys I say.

Top 4 for the CL and attracting new players to N17, even though there are no monkeys there.

  • 123spurs says:

Conte has failed if he and this team doesn’t get top4 for me both are to blame, shambles of united and arsenal losing 1st 3 games and spurs winning 1st 3 games. We all know we will lose to Liverpool and hoping Leeds don’t lose aswell, but knowing spurs, arsenal could have the chance to clinch top4 at spurs.

  • PompeyYid says:

    There are so many Ifs/Buts n Hopes…

    If We!
    If They!
    But if We!
    But if They!
    Hope we!
    Hope They!

Its at the mo! a never ending circle, so basically all we can do is wait n see, v the two B teams we really did eff it all up.

So not in our own hands now, thus the Ifs/Buts n Hopes. COYS
