Spurs Struggle As VAR Once Again Takes The Headlines – Match Stats

|

Having got our Premier League restart up and running properly with a solid victory over West Ham United, the players should have been well rested for tonight’s trip to Bramall Lane to face now struggling Sheffield United.

Chris Wilder’s side had a great start to the 2019/20 campaign following promotion and there was an outside chance they might make the Europa League prior to football being paused, since the restart their mojo and momentum has gone, so Jose Mourinho would be looking to capitalise on that as we continue to bid for a Champions League place.

It was a bright start from both sides really, but we better dominated possession and chances, and largely against the run of play the hosts took the lead just after the half hour mark. We responded almost instantly though and Harry Kane had the ball in the back of the net before a spineless referee bowed to the overtly pathetic Video Assistant Referee nonsense as apparently (after being barged to the floor) Lucas Moura ‘handballed’ the ball, so the goal was scrubbed out.

Sadly for us, the second half was dire in many ways and the control we did have disappeared and they made it count with two further goals.

Harry Kane rightly got on the scoresheet in the 90th minute, but it counted for little on a very disappointing night.

Hi TQ, I like and agree with your post overall but I still think Sissoko has plenty to offer alongside a Hojbjerg type especially whilst N’Dombele hopefully gets upto speed. Sissoko carries the ball very well indeed and is still capable of playing simple enough passes, etc to be viable in 1 one of the double pivot roles helping to keep it simple alongside a Hojbjerg type – it really depends who you are playing against also – he offers lungs and muscle being a beast of a man so can help both defensively and like we say bringing the ball forwards so is a good option perhaps away from home against the top 6, etc where we will not necessarily dominate the game and possession completely. At home and against weaker sides we could go with someone like Winks or Fernandes but I agree the ideal situation long term is N’Dombele in there with a Hojbjerg type. Then I would fully agree go with Lo Celso as the ACM in a 433 or as the No.10 in a 4231. We have then excellent options with the likes of Dele, Moura, Bergs, even Lamela to play with Sonny and HK10. up front. Personally I would start most games with Hojbjerg if we sign him, N’Dombele eventually once fully fit and on form hopefully sometime soon, Lo Celso, Dele, Sonny and HK10 but have the likes of Winks, Fernandes, Bergs and Moura not to mention Lamela to change things up if necessary, etc and offer full on competition and cover. I think with the signing of Hojbjerg it would complete our midfield and I’m OK with our attacking options aswell although in an ideal world would bring in a proper back-up to HK10 – although I can live with Sonny, Moura and Parrott doing this for the time being.

Then we need to concentrate on defence – RB and LCB. Full-backs will be crucial also in offering forward wing support especially if we go with central maestros like N’Dombele, Lo Celso and Dele all in the same side so we need to get in someone like Aarons and also look to get Sessegnon upto full speed. If we could do just that, etc I think our future will be bright but at the moment a lot of if’s and but’s and much, much work to be done especially on the training ground to perfect all mentioned here. JM to earn his corn fully?! Hope so and expect also!

Again many different views…. As to RB I can remember Dier can play there, as he did very well when he arrived at spurs.

IMO…We are in a very difficult situation now… could be called limbo.. between the good times of 4 years CL & a final…then decline due to reasons well documented on here and media. The Covid-19 has severely damaged International economies / football worldwide, then added to the Enic / THFC new stadium costs, no money for transfers… poch upset with Levy’s lack of funding / support for poch rebuilding, and he lost the dressing room as players were not responding, poss. thinking poch is leaving, and unrest of Ericsson rose toby wanting away. Now we have Jose a very different style of management, and tactical shape, which players are finding it hard to adapt.

As in any business where the t/o and profits are going down, (thfc games lost no europe compet.) unhappy workforce, I suggest… a major meeting of all players, jose, coaches and Levy. (then a board meeting Levy / Joe etc. ) A clear the air meeting, where all can speak freely their concerns and suggestions. on tactical ploys and players to help each other. A way forward be agreed and everyone work to the plan.

Then we can see over remaining games, if they keep to the new plan or not, any who are still unhappy can be transferred, new players, or manager brought in for next year. Using this logic Levy / Joe & THFC Board show their support as well, or… ENIC sell up, / walk away. Which would be an unlikely event.. or will it?

Not sure what result I want in the Wolves/Arsenal match. probably a Wolves win …. finishing above Arsenal may be the only thing left for this season!

  • Ekkaboy says:

Whilst I agree with much has been said here I think we need to have a more radical change. Get rid of Mourinho, too old out of date with no new ideas. Play young players, who want to play for Spurs and have a future with us. Play sessengnon, Ndombele, Tanganba and Foyth. I know. everyone complains about Foyth’s last game. But it was one mistake and if you looked at Alderweireld after that mistake he was back Pedalling so fast after that mistake he would have been in the back of the net himself if Willian(?) had not pulled the trigger. Foyth has more ability than most of the present team. Play any two full backs than the present duo. School boys could put in better crosses than the present two did v Sheff U. Now is the time to build for next season. We are not going to finish in the Europa league positions this year and let’s face it we are not going to spend too much on new players this summer. A new approach is needed.

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

We had nine players who played right up to the last weekend of the World Cup, we failed to sign a single player and we had bad injuries last season. It’s no surprise that our form tailed off last season. And we did get to the Champions League final last season. Although we invested in the summer injuries meant we saw very little of Le Celso, N’nombele and Sessegnon. Yes we were having a difficult time but Poch had taken us from also rans to a regular champions league team. Surely the sensible thing would have been to back Poch, but no Levy had to sack him and appoint his fantasy manager, a man who is far past his best days as a manager, a man who clearly can’t motivate his players any more, a man who has no tactical nous. He set his team up with no defensive midfield player, he set the defence up to take no account of Sheffield United strengths down the flanks, he had no creativity (Le Celso was too deep) and he had four strikers who just got in each other’s way. Clearly they haven’t been working on an attacking style of play. He has been out coached by almost every manager, some of them novices. The sooner we get rid of him the better. COYS

  • Loz says:

El jefe similar to my thoughts. I think we need two players each position and some youngster as 3rd players. My formation would be 4 2 3 1 and i would say Celso, Dele to fight it our behind Kane. Son and Stevie fight it out to the left and Moura and Lamela fight it out to the right. So we are sorted attacking wise other than another striker to push Kane and then a third striker in Parrot.

In the middle i would say we need a DM and Winks as cover and Sissoko and Ndombele fight it out for that 2nd midfield spot and then Skipp has the 3rd midfield cover. So just one player to come straight in, DM the rest are fine.

Defence i think we need LCB, left footed, to come straight in and we keep Vertonghen as back up and to cover for at least one more season simply because we can’t get everything done in one window. Then i say to raise funds we need to sell one of our RCB and out of Dier, Toby and Sanchez i would actually sell Toby. I know people might think this is mad but he is on the decline and i think we need to keep Dier for his versatility, can play left side but also DM but also keep because of his contract situation. If we sell him this window with one year left we are not going to get much, min fact clubs will probably wait to get him free, so we have to sign him up and that means keeping him, whereas Toby has a contract and with his age its the last opportunity to cash in imo. We could of course sell Sanchez but i think he has time on his side and is faster than Toby and if we keep Toby and sell Sanchez we want get a return on Toby. This means Sanchez and Dier to fight it our for that RCB.

Left back is ok, we have Davies and Sess to develop and Vertonghen can cover.

Right back now the way i see this is we need a new rb to come straight in and start because Aurier isn’t good enough. Now will that be Tanganga or Foyth im not sure. I think both those players are similar to Davies where they are more defenisve style than an attacking full back and i think we need one of each like we have in Davies and Sess. So i think we need to upgrade Aurier and he has to be sold. Then i would say Tanganga is the second rb which means unfortunately Foyth being sold even though i think he has time on his side and could be the youngster to cover CB or he could be the second rb and Tanganga could be the youngster to cover CB. I think the reason Foyth will be sold and probably has to is purely because he wants to play regular and im not sure he will as a CB over Sanchez or Dier and im not sure he will at rb under Jose has i think he likes one fullback attacking and i think it will be the right side has i think for now Davies is a starter at lb and more defensive. So for me a new rb with Tanganga as second rb or we get two new rbs in and Tanganga becomes the youngster to cover CB.

This for me says 2 players every position with 3 youngsters as 3rd players though the spine of the team. Tanganga 3rd player for CB, Skipp 3rd player for midfield and Parrot 3rd player for striker position.

So we sell Toby, Foyth (loan), Aurier, Rose, CCV which should bring in about 50m and we buy a LCB, DM RB and Striker. Im not sure which players to fill those positions but i would like to think we will only need to add about 40m to the sales revenue to achieve all of this, but will we have 40m.

We may have to wait for two windows which may mean keeping Aurier and not changing rb and using Aurier and Tanganga. If i had to chose in preference i would go for DM first.

Just look at the way Man You massacred Bournemouth with superb goals and exciting attacking football. We have the stone age moody, miserable, morose Jose to darken our gloom. What on earth was Levy doing panic buying this yesterday man? This is not the Spurs way. We play with flair, excitement, attacking , goal threats. Not boring the opposition to death with defensive, unimaginative dross. Get rid of Jose now. Our season is over. Why wait until December? He hasn’t a clue.

  • El Jefe says:

Hi LOZ, pretty much thinking along the same lines from the look of things – good read as always – great points! Personally I’m not sure on selling Toby as I think he’s probably worth more to us in terms of playing and experience than we’d fetch in selling him on now – remember he could have been bought for around £25m last summer apparently and there were no takers – I was happy at the time there weren’t especially for just £25m but quite confused at the reluctance to be perfectly frank!

Aurier has to go for me – fed up of his constant mistakes defensive wise and going forwards I reckon there are other’s out there who are still better than him anyway. I keep saying Aarons but have to be honest and say not 100% fully convinced yet – but he’s a much better prospect ceiling wise overall than keeping Aurier surely and I like the fact he’s home-grown and young similar to Sessegnon – build for the future ideally if at all possible! Foyth I have my doubt’s about selling but so far all we’ve seen from him is mistakes and he’s rather short also for a CB so on the balance of it I’d probably sell as we need the money desperately. Similar said of KWP – still pretty young but never really shown anything especially defensive wise and is very short so again I’d probably look to sell him on aswell as again we are desperate for money. Rose is an easy sale as are the likes of CCV and Amos – especially with as I say us needing money big time now.

Doctor Tottenham having cured Sheffield United of not being able to score we welcome our next patient, Everton who are unable to win away from home against the “traditional big six” followed by Bournemouth who are unable to beat anyone. I’m sure we can cure both of these two clubs of there ills. Next patient please

  • 123spurs says:

Now look at arsenal they were terrible, so what does that say about us, a rookie in arteta if jose loses in NLD it has to be the end. I’ve always said it, players have weak mentality, no leader on the pitch, which is why we haven’t won anything.

  • wentworth says:

A year ago we were in the Champions League Final. We are now a struggling mid table team 12 points adrift of top four. This is an utter disgrace and shambles. Levy …useless and miserly. Jose boring and ineffective. Demoralised and underperforming team. No young players coming through to lighten the gloom. Fabulous empty stadium. Brilliant training facilities. Disastrous management and leadership. Useless prospects. Time for a complete overhaul starting with the morose and depressing Jose.

  • TK says:

I’d gladly welcome Tim Sherwood back so that we could see the backside of the Little Moor (Mourinho in translation).

  • PompeyYid says:

123spurs….a follow on from your post regards Arteta, a rookie manager, if god forbid we lose the NLD it will be the 4th time JM, in his time in charge at Spurs, has lost to a rookie PL manager, already is Lamps of Chavs, Warner of SU and Olly of MU, being out thought by them gives me a problem and 2 minimum questions…

Is JM outdated and a has-been?

Are the players we have the real problem? this is because we have already lost 1 manager with them.

    Come On You Spurs…..Pleeeze!

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

PompeyYid – is JM outdated and a has been. I need to think about that one for about one second. He is so far past it, it is not true. His set up and tactics on Thursday were so bad it defied belief. He clearly does no work on the attacking side of the game, the strikers kept getting in each other’s way and despite the possession we had, we created virtually nothing. Sheffield picked us off so easily, Jose appearing totally unaware of their ability to overlap on the flanks. The fact that the players stopped chasing back in the second half says a lot about the players but also about the manger. IMO Jose has no clue how to manage in the modern game. All the best teams play fast attacking football with full backs pushed high up the pitch. Jose hates his full backs crossing the half way line (Aurier only goes forward because he is such a liability at the back). He simply is unable to create an effective winning team any more.
It looks like we will have no European football next season, I am pretty sure Jose will, for as long as he is in charge will stick largely to the same eleven – none of the younger players we have will get a look in, many will look to leave.
The sooner we get Jose out of our club the better before he does even more damage. We all know it’s going to end in tears in the first few months of next season, Levy should pull the plug now. COYS

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

PompeyYid – apologies – during my Jose rant I forgot to ask how you nd your wife are. I hope you re both safe and well.

  • Pauric says:

Is it the players??? Is it the manager???is the chairman??? Straight up truth it’s all of the above. We have a squad that’s average, defensively we need a complete cull, players past there best or else players that aint up to it. Midfield with no balance in it, no defensive midfielder, in attack we have our two best players in the squad in kane and son but they lack supply, Dele Alli is a busted flush and I would sell him in the morning but for the fact no top clubs would go near him. Mourinho has bar one club Porto that he’s ever managed spent millions and that’s the crux of the problem at this club. Tactically he’s very rigid in how he wants his team to play, has the game moved on from his ways certainly looks that way,and with a mediocre budget it spells severe trouble ahead. Levy appointing Mourinho goes against everything he’s spouted to the fans for years his great hope that the youth academy was going to supply spurs with great talent and we as a club would be going down a different road to all the other top clubs. Explain then how does mourinho fit into this great project?? Completely opposite in believes. Levy let Poch down big time, he walked away from investing in the squad and he left it to late to invest because the squad where past there best. Hence the club is on downward spiral and there is no easy fix.

DH….no worries mate, the missus and myself are doing ok, though she is terrified of the idiotic reaction by the numpties who either believe all is well or that virus has just disappeared, thanks for asking.

Well you answered my 2 questions very well, but am still of the opinion, give him a full season and with additions we can get that he wants, though even then you could be right or I am lol!

Hope you and your missus are keeping well mate. COYS

  • PompeyYid says:

Oh! yes, the Toffees, tomorrow night…

Could it be a sticky one?

    Will we come unstuck again?

    Will we get stuck in?

Will JM’s way start to treacle into the way we play?

Could you all have a chew on them queries!

Am expecting some not so sweet answers lol! COYS

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

Pom-eyYid, all good here. I’m with you on the people that broke the social distancing guidelines yesterday. Idiotic and selfish in my opinion. Still at least we are not in America where their stupidity and ignorance knows no bounds. Still, they voted for Trump so what do you expect. The general rule is to give managers time but I have seen absolutely no improvement under Jose, no defensive solidity, no attacking plan and no teamwork. That’s why I think he should go now, it simply won’t get any better under him. COYS

  • Love totty says:

This is the last chance for me to finally decide whether the problem lies with the players or the management. It certainly seems that little has changed with a change of coach so the finger points firmly at the players imo. They all flatter to deceive, capable of magic moments but sadly lacking in grit and urgency. The signs were there when the team imploded at the Bridge when the title was slipping away and again after Dembele was let go just as another push was needed to actually win something.
