Spurs Star Rued More Than Injury In Midweek “Emotional Shock”

|

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Moussa Sissoko has enjoyed a renaissance in our 2018/19 campaign, and for many fans we’ve now actually seen the very best of his performances on the pitch and he’s taken plenty of credit for that.

The midweek Champions League quarter-final encounter with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium wasn’t one of his better moments though as he picked up an injury in the first half and was replaced by Fernando Llorente in the 41st minute.

A lot of fans felt that substitution would be our undoing as the battle in the middle of the park turned against us and Pep Guardiola’s side took full advantage to consolidate their lead until Llorente made his own impact on the game.

It was almost a doubly bad night for our Frenchman though, as he admitted himself he completely missed the fact Raheem Sterling’s late effort had been ruled out for offside and after he’d stormed down the tunnel thinking we’d lost the match 5-3, it was only after speaking to a staff member did he realise he should actually be celebrating.

Sky Sports (via L’Equipe) quoted him post-game saying.

“I was on the bench when I saw the goal that made it 5-3. I was so upset that I returned directly to the dressing room. I was alone, no one had accompanied me, no TV screen was broadcasting the game. In my head we were eliminated. Then one of the staff members entered the dressing room and told me: ‘Incredible, we did it!’. I said: ‘How did we do it?’ At that moment, he told me that the goal had been disallowed. So I put on a t-shirt, I forgot about my injury and I ran outside to join the others, not to miss the celebrations for such a historic moment. It was an incredible, emotional shock.”

I can only imagine there were quite a few Spurs fans who made the same mistake for a while if they chose to leave their living rooms to avoid the need to replace a broken television.
