Spurs Star Could Delay His “Adventure” A Little While Longer

|

Mousa Dembele has given great service to this club over the past six years. If he does leave the club after making 236 appearances in the White shirt then I will wish him well.

However, I do struggle with the idea of players moving away from European football before their race has been run. At 30 years of age, Mousa still has a couple of years at least at the top of his game, and after an excellent season for us, it does seem like he may leave before his time is up.

When asked about his future this week, our no.19 stated he is happy to stay with us, but he then goes on to state he is weighing up his options with a new adventure in mind:

“Tottenham is my club, my family is happy in London and the children are enrolled in a school – all of which you cannot just leave like that. But otherwise I’m open to anything. Since I was little, I am someone who loves an adventure.”

I have already talked about the championship in China with Axel Witsel but I also talked about the MLS to Laurent Ciman and if someone was playing in Bangladesh, I would also ask him for information. It will be time to study the options available to me, but I do not see myself playing in another club than Tottenham in England.”

No one would begrudge him a move, either because he wants to experience a new country or even if he is looking for a final payday. Still, with the ability he has, combined with the form he has been in, you are left thinking that he could make the move a few years down the line.

Of course, his hand may have been forced here. With one year left on his contract, Daniel Levy is probably keen to sell now if the player isn’t willing to sign a new deal. From the club’s point of view, that is fair enough, but I do wonder how the negotiations have been dealt with.

From Dembele’s words, it’s clear his family are very settled, and it does then prompt you to ask whether a one-year contract extension would have been that hard to achieve.

Perhaps the Belgian is seeking a longer deal than that, on much-improved terms. Especially if he is getting offers from China that do satisfy those demands, contract talks can then be a lot more difficult.

For the length of time he has spent here, and the great memories he has given us, it would be sad to see him go if it does come to that, but I suppose sometimes things just run their natural course.
