Spurs sign Romero on initial loan from Atalanta

Cristian Romero has officially completed his move to Spurs from Italian side Atalanta, in an initial loan deal which both clubs are confident will be made permanent through an optional future fee clause of £42.5 million.

While previously most were under the impression that it was only a permanent deal that was being discussed, the deal is fantastic for Spurs as it allows them to spend that fee on other players in the mean time and continue strengthening the team.

The current Serie A Defender of the Year was greeted at Stansted Airport by his teammate at Atalanta Pierluigi Gollini, who has also moved to North London on an initial loan deal with the option to make it permanent.

After impressing in the Italian top flight, playing 31 games and scoring twice as Atalanta finished third, Romero became Argentina’s first choice centre-back due to his incredible performances at the Copa America where he helped his nation to win the trophy.

In fact, he impressed so much that compatriot Lionel Messi asked Barcelona to sign him, before

Romero, 23, will not have to isolate or train individually separate from the rest of the group either, having already had a complete vaccine against COVID-19.

He isn’t likely to be the last centre-back to arrive at Hotspur Way this Summer either, with another expected to sign along with a right-back, creative midfielder and a striker too in what looks set to be a very busy few weeks for Sporting Director Fabio Paratici.

Takehiro Tomiyasu is likely to sign from Bologna in the very near future now that his time at the Olympics with Japan is over, while the club remains linked to the likes of Chelsea target Jules Kounde, former Spurs academy youngster Noni Madueke and striker Dusan Vlahovic.
