Spurs Show Some Improvement But We Didn’t Really Cut Through The Toffee – Match Stats

|

Following on from the deeply disappointing defeat to Sheffield United last week, Tottenham Hotspur were back in action this evening as we welcomed Everton to White Hart Lane.

Manager Jose Mourinho was joined by the fans in wanting to see a reaction and we did get one.

We were the better side in the opening 45 minutes and created the better chances, but it took an own goal in the 24th minute to get us underway as we hadn’t had a shot on target. The only other major point in the game at this stage was the bizarre altercation between a ranting Lloris and Sonny – so it’ll be interesting to see what that was about.

The second half was much the same as the first, but Sonny and Lloris had made up over the break and we continued to be the better side, but with no real reward when it came to extending our lead.

Everton certainly finished the stronger as they threw the kitchen sink at us, but 1-0 was how it finished and all three points lift us back into eighth place.

It wasn’t a classic and it wasn’t really that inspiring, but Spurs were worthy of the win and it notched up Jose’s 200th PL win.

Our subs rarely make an impact, we were so bad last night, thank god Everton were worse, we didnt even great one decent move/ passage of play, lucas moura offers nothing, the guy just runs around, is winks gonna get any better and hes bang average or is that it from him.

An absolutely pathetic performance. Jose is clearly unable to tighten the defence without totally sacrificing the attacking side of the game.Again players were getting in each other’s way, there was no creativity unless Harry dropped deep. When that happened there was no one getting into the box to support him. There was the illusion that we were more solid at the back but that was because Everton showed zero attacking intent. Last night was as bad a game of football that I have ever seen. It was like Sunday park football at times and unbearable to watch. There is simply no positives to take out of a game where the sole objective was to bore the opposition into submission. Jose is a sad shadow of a once great manager. The game has moved on and passed him by and he is unable to do anything about it. A totally depressing night to be a Spurs fan.

As I suggested back quite a while ago – send Sessegnon out on loan maybe to get some vital experience and learn his trade fully at someone else’s expense. The same could be said of Tanganga (remember there were quite a few error’s/mistake’s to his game even when he was being highly lauded earlier in the season), same with Skipp and Parrott also not to mention Clarke who already is fully in this kind of process. Even Foyth might benefit from a loan out if not going to be sold and is still somehow in JM’s future plans……!

KWP for example finally seems to be benefiting at Southampton from his loan, I’ve read CCV is getting good reviews aswell at Luton and Amos at QPR is doing OK and even Rose is apparently doing well at Newcastle – worst case it put’s players in the shop window and hopefully also raises their value if things go right!

Definitely an option worth considering as regards our younger players!

I see some rumblings as regards Lucas Moura – I still think he played OK in the last 2 games and is more than worthy of a place in the squad – think overall he easily matched Sonny in terms of his play in these last 2 games and Sonny is 1 of our 2 superstar’s at the moment along with talisman HK10. The same would go for Bergwijn and Lamela for me – worthy squad member’s at the moment without too many doubts – we need competition and cover at the end of the day if we want to challenge for top 4 and for the cup competition’s also.

For me though I would like to see Lo Celso, Dele, Sonny and HK10 as our 4 regular attacker’s especially in the top games – for those calling out Dele – his Prem goal record is basically the same as Sonny’s who is rightfully considered a superstar for us! In overall games Sonny is about 20 goals ahead of Dele, but solely on Prem records – both are on just over 50 goals in just over 150 games! BS stated last week that only De Bruyne I believe has scored more than Dele this season from midfield and it’s been a stop start season for Dele again – given a proper run fully fit I think he could be a top, top player again for us as he was when he first joined for those first 2 season’s, especially the 2nd one where he got 18 Prem goals and over 20 goals in all games that season!

With Lo Celso and even the likes of N’Dombele who can both clearly spot a pass, etc – I think Dele could reap the rewards with his constant forward running into the box to join HK10 – furthermore if we get in some good attacking full-backs (I WISH LOL) who push forwards and we start playing good attacking football again!

  • El Jefe says:

Listening to the Portuguese commentary on Portuguese Sky yesterday it said that both full-backs were atleast trying to push forwards yesterday at last which is a better sign as regards our attacking football – problem is we need a better set of full-backs unfortunately. Get in 2 good attacking full-backs and we can drop 1 of the wingers (obviously keep Sonny in – 1 of our 2 superstar’s as stated earlier) and play both Lo Celso and Dele in the attacking third – like we used to with Eriksen and Dele because Walker/Trippier and Rose would push up forwards and help dictate play on the wings for us – we need to get back to those days and more attack minded footy!

  • El Jefe says:

I see Pulisic is getting rave reviews and he plays as a forward (wing) for Chelski I believe – 8 goals in 21 Prem appearance’s this season. Dele has the same 8 goals in 24 Prem appearance’s this season – so basically not much difference is there – yet one is getting rightfully praised whilst the other is constantly getting slated – doesn’t make that much sense surely does it?! As I stated given a proper run in behind HK10 in the hole (devoid of defensive duties pretty much) with full fitness to back this up and I think Dele will prove to be a top, top class player once again for us and how we need him to return to past glories!

Everton was just one of those games where no matter what you opinion is on the manager/players, you can see what you want in the game.

The Jose detractors will point to the underwhelming performance, lack of attacking intent and the argument between Lloris and Son as proof that things aren’t better, and that in fact they might be worse.

The Jose proponents will point to the result, the clean sheet and an improved mentality.

There is probably some truth in both points of view, although at this stage, I think everyone needs to have lower expectations.

We had a horrible start to the season (in fact, poor form since the beginning of 2019), we’ve had some key players leave, we’re unlikely to have the funds to rebuild the squad – the reality is that we are probably back to being an EL-level club, at present, that might make the top 4 on occasion if everything falls into place.

Regardless of who the manager is, expecting us to be in the latter stages of the CL, and in the conversation for titles, is an unrealistic expectation right now.

Accepting that reality, Jose has got us performing like an EL-level club right now, more or less. Can anything more REALLY be asked of him, with this squad? And this sort of backing? would anybody else coming into the club right now be 100% sure to do better?

Personally, that’s the way I look at it, and my answer is no. If a change needs to happen, it’s how the club is run. Until that happens, all Spurs managers will run into the same constraints – it’s just a question of time.
