Tottenham Hotspur kicked off their pre-season campaign in the International Champions Cup with a positive victory over Juventus out in Singapore on Sunday.

As attentions turn to Manchester United, before we pivot to the Audi Cup and the tie with Real Madrid as we travel to Germany, the Juventus clash should certainly whet the appetite ahead of the 2019/20 Premier League campaign and the game held plenty of positives.

Erik Lamela (30), Lucas Moura (65) and Harry Kane (90+3) all got on the scoresheet to give us the 3-2 win but Kane’s effort as he lobbed Wojciech Szczesny deep in stoppage time will certainly take the headlines from the game.

Plenty of youngsters also got decent run-outs as fans continue to expect big things from Troy Parrott and Jack Roles (but they weren’t the only potential stars of the future on show) and it wasa debut for record signing Tanguy Ndombele.

Paulo Gazzaniga got an early chance to impress again as well with Hugo Lloris falling foul of a bout of tonsillitis, so all in a good weekend.

Juventus (4-3-3): Buffon (Szczesny 46), Cancelo, Rugani (Demiral 46), Bonucci (c) (De Ligt 63), De Sciglio, Can (Rabiot 46), Pjanic (Muratore 76), Matuidi (Kastanos 76), Bernardeschi, Mandzukic (Higuain 46), Ronaldo (Pereira 63). Substitutes (not used): Pinsoglio, Loria, Di Pardo, Coccolo, Beruatto, Toure, Frederiksen, Mavididi.

Spurs (4-3-1-2): Gazzaniga, Walker-Peters (Marsh 71), Alderweireld (c) (Foyth 46), Tanganga (Vertonghen 46), Georgiou (White 71), Skipp (Bowden 90+2), Winks (Roles 63), Dele (Sissoko 46), Lamela (Ndombele 63), Son (Lucas 46), Parrott (Kane 46). Substitutes (not used): De Bie, Whiteman, Lyons-Foster, Eriksen.

Onto the next one…

  • Poch had 4 targets this summer. Aarons, Ndombele, Lo Celso and Sess.

3 out of 4 is pretty decent.

I’m pretty happy with the quality of the players we have brought in. But if Eriksen goes we will become weak in the AM area again.

    RB still and issue.

I think we are fine up top. Son, Lucas can play as wing forwards. Sess can cover them and hopefully Troy will get the odd game.

We have had worse transfer windows. 😉

  • B108 – do you honestly think there’s space for Fernandes?! We now have 6 AM’s if Sess plays LWF and there’s Clarke at Leeds which will make it 7 next season (assuming Lo Celso becomes permanent) and that’s counting on Eriksen and N’Koudou being sold. Eriksen will go to Real I reckon – Pogba is a no go IMHO – hoping for 100m Euros let’s see. Agree on Dele – really needs to step up but hopefully this season will play closer to HK10 and that can see him doing the business again.

  • TQ2 I read £350K, then I read £250K – either way we’d have to move everyone’s contracts up and also negotiate difficult image rights – I think it was a non-starter to be honest – similar to Coutinho – never really and truly in for them. Expect Dybala to go to Inter in a possible swap for Icardi but Inter want money aswell and Juve said no way – let’s see what happens. January would be amazing but seriously, seriously doubt it. If I was him would stay at Juve – cracking side – if they can muster Icardi they’ll be there or thereabouts in CL tihs season.

  • RD – top post. If Norwich go back down we can get Aarons next summer a la Sessegnon this year after missing out last summer lol. Eriksen has to go – we can’t afford to let him run down his contract surely. I wonder what our money situation is – could we afford to get Lo Celso/Dybala/Fernandes over the line this summer or was a loan best we could do after buying Tan and Jack and Ryan and without selling Chris first?!

  • Eriksen to Madrid and Fernandes to Atletico I reckon is a possibility. Can’t see Eriksen wanting to go Atletico and can’t see Madrid getting Pogba so Eriksen goes there most probably. Joao Felix to pull Bruno Fernandes to Atletico and form a deadly duo behind Diego Costa. They apparently want James Rodrigues who is pure class but would Madrid sell to them again and especially what was a star player?! I’ve read no so will be interesting to see what happens.

  • Are we a stronger squad than last season ???in my opinion in certain positions we have strengthened for example midfield ,yes I think we have, fullbacks for me are not to the standard we need ,I’m fine with selling Trippier as long as you bring a better player to the club or have a ready made replacement neither happened.Lo Celsio in on a loan which I find strange ,is he here to compete with Eriksen or more likely his replacement which means where back to square one no competition.finally looks like Kane plays every single premier league match again this season no outright striker as backup,my fellow Irish man is only a kid I hope the fans don’t expect to much from him.I don’t believe we have the team or squad to challenge for the title 3rd place is probably our best bet this season and I think d gooners will take fourth obviously City champions with Liverpool in second having not strengthened and salah ,mane, and firminho playing a lot of footie over the summer. The Dybala supposed signing was a complete circus not for one moment was levy doing that deal,lo celsio all summer long in negotiations and ended up a loan to buy at the end of season(mouthinho) rings a bell.

  • Pauric I quite like the Lo Celso deal – if all goes well and he takes to the Prem then we sign him for sure, if not then we can send him back and look elsewhere, also by loaning it doesn’t compromise us with regards to Eriksen in that we have cover but do not necessarily need to sell him or fire sale him and what if by some miracle he signs a new contract?! This way we can have both, ie cake and eat it. I’m of the opinion that Dele can play ACM just like Eriksen and Lo Celso so we do have cover there if needs be. I expect Eriksen to go but there’s always a chance he’ll stay or even sign a new contract so let’s see what happens. If he does go would be nice to get 90-100m Euros but suspect it will be around 70-80m perhaps some add-ons – hope Levy can work his magic here. I agree we won’t win the title , maybe even challenge for it and I’m looking at 3rd and CL regular again aswell. With regards to Parrott agree aswell hopefully not too much expectation on his shoulders as still only 17 and completely in-experienced. We may still get Llorente back you never know but atleast with Sessegnon, Lamela, Dele and Lo Celso means Son and Moura can cover HK10 if necessary.

  • Whatever our starting eleven may be I feel we will have the most potent bench we have EVER had before. That can’t be bad. Now it’s up to MP to make the team gel.

  • Geof – agreed and good point. I’m sure MP won’t have too many problems doing that. He’s got some decision’s to make – at CB we have 3 class player’s and only 2 will surely play, RB and even LB will be very interesting indeed, CM Tan, Siss and Winks who gets dropped?! 6 AM’s as I’ve already discussed so what combo?! Only HK10 is safe I’d say and rightfully so seeing as he’s out talisman and true superstar!

    • I’m hoping that the additions to the squad mean that HK will get some rest this season. There are at least two who can take more of a CF role if needed.

  • El Jeff… Fernandes could be a 2nd striker who rotates with harry, and as AMF.

Spurs problems last season was we did not have enough top quality players in the squad to step in and have the same top team every game as City have done 3 years now. This coupled with poch training and match efforts, injuries, loss of form showed in last 3 months of the season.

As to being overloaded with AMF / DMF players, spurs can now actually go on and win a cup or two, I expect the squad will not be complaining. Same goes to city players, how often do we see or read about them in the media complaining they don’t get enough playing minutes. Yes wages are a part of that, and players in squad getting their medals proves that a club needs 2 like for like players in every position to win titles. Exception was Leicester, who had no European competition to partake in their title win year.

  • Poch can’t have any complaints. Levy delivered 3 of of his main targets.

The Lo Celso deal was a very clever deal. His transfer fee will now come out of next seasons transfer budget.

Due to us paying up front payments for Ndombele, Clarke and Sess it was necessary to do because of cash flow.

Levy delivered even if Eriksen goes. Credit where it’s due.

Time tot back the club and get behind the team. COYS

  • My window cleaner Daniel, got it wrong. But we did get 2 out of the 3. Fair enough. I look forward to seeing all the new guys in action.

Dybala could come in January I suppose. 5 months to sort it if at all possible.

We have cover for Kane. We now have Son, Moura, Lo Celso and even Sessegnon possibly to play as main striker in his place, if needed. All have experience in this. All have scored goals… Parrott may or may not feature but for one so young he is looking a good prospect… I’m happy.

  • Spot on there Real Deal with your post.

Basically I am chuffed with the business we have done, 3 out of 4 cannot be to bad eh! Poch must be pleased.

Though some have grievances about our RB, I honestly think Poch knows better, I really do think we are stronger this year/start of season, last season at the beginning we were running on empty, as no rest for the multitude of the 1st team, still playing away from home blah! blah!, and yet we still got the best start in the Prem for us.

So for me its simple…Look out Prem Spurs are coming. COYS

  • Ah well another window closes and at last we as a club appear to understand it. Two things are encouraging, firstly that we actually did some business with 4 signings, 1 immediately returning to the selling club on loan, couldn’t understand why we signed Clarke unless it was to do with “home grown” rules, at £10 million he is not in Leeds starting X1. The other thing that at last we have employed is the loan system, I have never understood why we don’t use it, but the Lo Celso deal is a no brainer. If it doesn’t work have we got an option to buy or an obligation, on stats alone Fernandez looked a better bet but so be it. NDombele appears to be a good purchase, a quality player. I am chuffed we bought Sessegnon, he looks very similar to Bale as a youngster, a full back who became a quality Left Sided attacking player, he seems expensive up front but will turn out to be a bargain. I personally hope that Eriksen goes while the European windows are open, last season in most of the big games his heart wasn’t in it, and this has been definitely

  • That posting posted before I meant it to, I was saying that last season in key games and in pre-season Eriksen just wasn’t at it, and if he isn’t 100% committed, both him and the club would be best served if he left, rather than his apathy spreading in the dressing room. I am encouraged by the business doneat last, but will wait for a few early PL results before doing hand stands, or getting carried away, as some of our top 4 challengers have also bought well. Hopefully we are now at the beginning of a continuous improvement process, which requires squad refreshing season on season, as all the top teams do all across Europe do. We might even now be more able to compete for honours, we may still be some way behind City and Liverpool in the PL title shake up, but a domestic trophy might just be possible.

  • A team that seem to buy well in every window despite them having to sell at least 1 top player every season, this time it was Maguire, to fund incomings, is Leicester, I expect them to be top 6 challengers. I think the top 4 places will be interesting with Chelsea less competitive without Hazard, and with Lampard with “L” plates up, and unable to buy, Arsenal have spent big, decent team but David Luiz always gives the opposition a chance, and Man Utd although improved may still fall short. We should with reasonable rub of the green, and a less fatigued squad than last season, and with a couple of quality additions adding depth, should finish in the same 3rd as last time, but a lot closer than the 27 points adrift we were last season.

  • Frank, Funnily (perhaps surprisingly), Liverpool haven’t done in this TW what you have just described as “squad refreshing season on season”.

They have spent less than 2m on one young player in (I think) got Adrian from WHU in on a ‘free’ and let quite a few go. Klopp has himself said that there is no need for transfers just because other clubs are doing so. Pochettino had said similar himself after the previous two windows of Spurs’ non-action…

Anyway, I’m pleased that you seem quite contented in pre-season for once…

  • I think it’s likely that Lampard wanted Luiz out, it wouldn’t surprise me if he was one of the main changing room conspiritors responsible for undermining the previous managers at Chelsea. Let’s hope he can do the same at the Emirates. :- )

  • Frank….hear hear mate, good posts there and I ditto HT about you being quite contented. COYS

  • TQ2S….ha ha ha regards Luiz, that’s the plan, plant a double agent to upset the Gooners apple cart. COYS
