Spurs Need To Improve, But I’m Not So Sure On Poch’s Post Villa Words – “We Were Confused”

|

After Champions League disappointment, but some strong moves from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window, we finally took to the White Hart Lane pitch today as we welcomed Aston Villa back to the Premier League.

Tanguy Ndombele was the only fresh face to feature for manager Mauricio Pochettino, but somewhat surprisingly Christian Eriksen was on the bench.

Having gone 1-0 down against the run of play, we utterly dominated the game and although it took us a long time to properly break them down (with some massive chances going begging), summer signing Tanguy Ndombele had us back on level terms, and Harry Kane did what Harry Kane occasionally doesn’t do in the month of August (if you listen to the tired old pundits), and helped himself to a good brace to give us all three points.

Speaking to the BBC following the fulltime whistle, Poch said of the performance and result.

“We were a bit confused and that is my fault, I’m the manager, but we made a lot of mistakes and didn’t work well in the first half. In the second half we fixed the problems, our positional game was completely different and we moved the ball better. It’s very important for us to start with a victory, we have a lot of work to do.”

Harder work than we probably anticipated, but three points are three points and again we utterly dominated but just needed more clinical finishing. We were definitely on top in the first half and whilst Poch is right to call for improvement, I can only assume he’s trying to talk up the second half more by being a touch over the top on the first 45.

A win’s a win though.
