Following the hugely disappointing defeat to Newcastle United last weekend, Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino will be looking for a reaction from whatever first team squad he chooses to select for this Sunday’s derby encounter with Arsenal.

Making the short trip to the Emirates Stadium for the game, it’s not just a return to winning ways and three points that we’ll be looking for, as both sides are playing for the bragging rights.

Unai Emery appears to have a few doubts of his own as we head into the game, and with injuries to Juan Foyth and Ryan Sessegnon being of a lengthier nature, we’ll simply have to see if Poch can call on Tanguy Ndombele, Dele Alli or Kyle Walker-Peters for this one.

Three games in, there’s certainly no reason to panic, but even for those fans who feel this season is a transition period as Poch reshapes the squad for the future, we want to be celebrating the win at the end of this one.

  • Those who have tolerated my comments over the years know that I do not demand wins, but that I am terribly disappointed by poor performances. I want our team to play up to its abilities, and when our current team does this, it can win against anyone. But our last match vs. Newcastle did not provide such effort. Need to do better, lads, especially vs. the holes where the sun don’t shine. Let’s perceive that all Spurs on the pitch were paying attention and daring to go forward. Put the Arse’s on their back feet and their back sides at times. Play with passion, lads, and stay alert. None of this drifting away here and there. We are cock sure of ourselves on the pitch. Show it.

  • Welcome Barnet Boy from yet another old git. Originally hail from Enfield so next door to Barnet!

I have absolutely no idea what will happen on Sunday – part of me thinks it will be typical Spurs to prove us all wrong and go out and stuff the Gooners – another part thinks we will get a right royal stuffing. Whatever happens another lacklustre performance will prove to me that there is something horribly wrong at N17.

As usual I live in hope!! COYS.

  • We probably have the hardest group of all the English clubs but could be worse – still expect us to qualify from that especially as by the time the games come around we should hopefully be settled. Only question mark for me is the squad big enough to cope fighting initially on 3 fronts – Prem, CL and EFL? Even barring the EFL, is it strong enough to compete in Prem/CL – guess we’ll soon start finding out but personally worried and starting Sunday – we’re not at the races at the moment and last year they had the better of us in both matches and have now improved quite a bit – worrying times ahead me thinks.

  • I think this is a transitional season and we have some major problems – our 2 quality CB’s in Toby and Verts are the wrong side of 30, not playing together and apparently unhappy. The same goes for our main play-maker Eriksen – approaching his peak years but looking to get out – it looks as if he’s staying for his final year of contract but will he give his all and even if he does what to do about losing out on anywhere from £60-120m in a transfer fee. We have 3 major new signings but for the time being we’re unsure when and how Lo Celso and Sess will be used. We have major problems at full-back especially RB and there are question marks over the size of the squad and whether will be able to cope with Prem/CL and EFL initially especially with potential injuries and loss of form as an when so it’s not looking too good at the moment and we couldn’t have a tougher test than against Arseanal on Sunday to see what we’re made of!

  • I agree that we have problems, but they may get worse if any of Vertonghen, Alderwiereld, and Eriksen leave before the European windows close. We seem to have this exact same discussion every season, we always seem to be short of numbers or quality in certain positions, the problems just never seem to get addressed.

  • Part of me is still excited by the fact we have the likes of Toby, Verts and Eriksen not to mention Lloris, Son, Dele, Moura, Kane etc and having added N’Dombele, Lo Celso and Sess made it even more exciting. Unfortunately all this pales into insignificance when team spirit is low and results not forthcoming – I’m now worried about what is to come especially in the next few weeks – finding it very hard to stomach Sunday’s result to be honest – as I had said before that match forget the performance – let’s just get the 3 points on the board and move on but low and behold they weren’t capable of doing it. I reckon we could easily lose again on Sunday and be 5 points behind the gooners already! Hoping it’s not the case but I read N’Dombele is out so who do we go with in midfield – Winks and Sissoko – let’s wait and see but don’t think it’s a strong enough partnership especially against top 6 side’s. Maybe give Dier a run out but even then would not instill too much hope…..!

  • Frank – I’m worried because for example at full-back Rose has been partly to blame for all 4 goals IMHO and he was supposed to be our best full-back and a top Prem LB. Davies is now the best defensive full-back we have but he’s no Rose going forwards and we rely on our full-backs to provide width in attack. I wonder where Sess will be played if played at all as soon as he’s back and running but he surely still has much to learn based on last season and in general given only recently turned 19 and he may well learn the ropes playing LWF from the bench – who knows?! KWP looks to lightweight and in-experienced and will cost us to learn properly – needs loaning out IMHO. Foyth could be the answer at RB but again should be sound enough at the back but what about going forwards and crossing, etc?! We should have loaned KWP out and signed a quality RB and then had Foyth to cover/compete IMHO. At CB we should have signed a long term replacement for Verts to cover and compete also. Then there’s the morale of our 2 best CB’s – which is very questionable at the moment. Added to this Sanchez’s morale can’t be too high after having conceded 4 goals in 3 game’s and having an unhappy Verts breathing down his neck as it is! No wonder we’ve not kept a clean sheet yet – worrying times based on this!

  • Fair play Bissaka at £50m but Leicester got Perreira from Porto last summer for £20m and he’s been quality for them. Dalot another from Porto who looks tasty and cost less than £20m last summer. Just 2 examples that quality can be bought for a decent price. Unfortunately Aurier has not lived upto the promise at £23m but you can’t get them all right – sell him and bring in someone who can do the job properly. At LCB bring in someone who can eventually take over from Verts – a left footed quality defender. At RCB we have Toby whose still good for a few more season’s assuming signs a new contract plus we have Davy and Juan so I think we’re sorted there thank fuck!

    • Firstly, thank you to those who welcomed me aboard.

Buntingford Yid, my first job was in Enfield then moved up to Cheshire so quite a round trip for home games.

Regarding the derby match the only safe and obvious prediction I would make is that it will be nothing like the Villa and Newcastle games. Hopefully players like Son and Moura can make use of their quick feet in space. Like everybody else I am aware of the glaring deficiencies in our defence so I’m not betting on a goalless draw. Needless to say in a match that means so much to the supporters the strongest possible eleven must be picked regardless of anything going on behind the scenes.

  • I don’t think Toby is going anywhere for now.

It occurred to me earlier…..weren’t we here at the same point last season talking about our hopes that things would improve after the international break?

  • TQ – didn’t we have 9 from 9 last year at this stage and then going on to face Watford away before the international break?! We were much stronger last season with 9 points already on the board, this year we have 4 and 3 shit performances quite frankly! All we need now is a top 6 opponent away and on top a NLD!!! There also wasn’t the pressing need of having 3 of our best in the final year of their contracts and in-fighting and low morale, etc. If anything morale was riding high after a win against Utd away and Poch was having to calm things down saying we’d won nothing yet!

  • BB belated welcome – agree we need to put out our best players if we are going to get a result, bet Arse’s tinker boy will put out his best for this no doubt.

  • Agree TQ – don’t think Toby or Verts or Eriksen are going anywhere from the look of things so good news apart from Chris in that we’re likely going to lose anywhere from £60-£120m on him, I’d say probably 100m Euros which is £90m – that’s a lot of dough to spunk down the drain but so it is – hopefully he performs to his very best this next season (well atleast until Jan) and then we learn from this massive mistake. Dunno, I read and can accept that for £11.5m he’s been a legend of a servant for the club and there’s that to hold onto. That said more should have been done back in the day to get him on an improved contract valuing him at his true worth. £200k ain’t bad, but how many times have we offered to get to that amount and at what stages?! A Madrid/Barca/Juve will better that probably next season especially on a free contract! Ramsey’s no way better than Eriksen and is on £400k apparently after his free transfer to Juve from Arseanal – so no reason why Eriksen can’t command a similar amount for next season when can leave us on a free…….!

  • I hope spurs players and manager have got their mojo back at Enfield Training ground, and the bad atmosphere has been lifted. Otherwise Gooners will give us a hiding and spurs will be in serious trouble, in bottom half of league and behind city / pool / gooners which will take a lot of effort and luck (them losing and drawing while we win) to get back on terms.

Upon reflection to last season CL games run… As we have seen many times, teams with relegation form in league games reverse that in FA Cup games, the pressure on them is somewhat less, and they go onto final at Wembley. Seems that has applied to spurs players. Now we are back in the relegation form of losing games / drawing. Poch & coaches / even Levy (paying new contracts to toby and jan) has to turn them around to positive feelings and attitudes. COYS

  • As I’ve said before.. it is time Levy did a modric type deal with Eriksen, sign a 1 year contract at 200k pw. leave next summer. THFC will get 50m or so, Eriksen his move away. Hopefully this will give Eriksen motivation and the squad confidence that our playmaker is back and toby / jan still at the CD line.

  • That’s probably the best we can hope for regarding Eriksen block 108, there is also the hope he signs a longer term deal again with the proviso he can leave within the contract period for a reasonable fee if certain clubs come calling. There are whispers that Toby will sign for another 2-3 years, let’s hope so.

It is being reported that a major bookmaker has suspended betting on Poch walking before the end of September, hope it’s just bullshit but considering everything that is supposedly going on we shouldn’t be too surprised if he does!

With regards to the NLD, I’m hoping Torreira doesn’t play, he is a vicious little git who is going to do some serious damage at some point if not brought under control.

  • TQ .. I would not be surprised if that rumour of Poch leaving was started by Journos / fans of rival PL top 5 clubs… and West Ham..

  • That’s very likely block, be fair though, we would probably put the boot in if they were in a similar position, wouldn’t we? 🙂
