With a more vintage showing from Tottenham Hotspur in our last Premier League clash against Burnley, Wednesday evening had us back in Champions League action against Bayern Munich and manager Jose Mourinho had already confirmed that a number of players had been left at home and there was a strong likelihood we would see some of our Academy graduates for this one.
I think looking around, most agreed with his choice to rest the likes of Harry Kane as we aren’t catching Bayern Munich in top spot and neither are we going to relinquish second place either – so the game is a bit of a dead rubber, however, plenty wanted some revenge after the previous result at White Hart Lane.
Despite the speculation about changes, our youngsters were on the bench and it was a reasonably strong lineup. That also applied to the hosts though and 14 minutes in, they were marginally on top and we were 1-0 down. It was a decent reaction though in many ways and Ryan Sessegnon opened his club account in the 20th minute to draw us level, but then Bayern took charge.
Going in at the half time break only 2-1 down did not reflect the game really (although we had moments), so maybe it was our day after all?
No, not really.
Bayern added a 3rd with a little over 25 minutes remaining and we still didn’t really find a second gear. The scoreline could’ve been greater for them, but revenge would’ve been nice for us.
All in, it was a dead rubber and the more ‘glass half full’ will see some positives – not least Mourinho has now seen more of the squad first hand. The ‘glass half empty’ bunch will have bigger concerns.
Onto the next one, but at least Jose should’ve learnt from it.
