With another morale boosting victory over Red Star Belgrade in the midweek Champions League clash, Tottenham Hotspur will be looking to build on that victory and begin to address our Premier League form on Saturday as we welcome newly promoted Sheffield United to White Hart Lane.

The Blades have been missing from the top flight for a few years, so it’s a chance to renew an old acquaintance and I would imagine plenty in the fanbase would applaud manager Chris Wilder for his achievements at Bramall Lane and their approach to playing the game.

In reality and without any disrespect meant, this is another game fans would expect Mauricio Pochettino to take all three points from when it came to paper – but given relative form, they are three points ahead of us in the table and nothing is guaranteed if we don’t perform and that has been a harsh lesson already this year.

Spurs v Sheffield United - Win, Lose Or Draw?

Squad selection is anyone’s guess, especially with niggly injuries hitting a few again – but at least we have Sonny back for this one.

  • PLY – people are calling for recruitment yet firstly we need to make space for that and secondly where does the money come from when Levy can’t/won’t invest – my suggestion is to juggle the squad and even streamline it. Rather have another N’Dombele than both Winks and Dier. Lamela is always injured and as I said does not produce anywhere near enough to be 1 of our top earner’s on over £100K a week. Aurier and Rose have done nothing but show themselves up all season. Wanyama is finished at Spur’s and Eriksen is a goner. KWP did not take his chance and Foyth is now our 4th attempt at a RB this season after KWP, Sanchez and Aurier. I don’t know what people are watching/listening 2 or paying for/invested in but it ain’t bloody good enough and a major shake-up is required just as I am suggesting!

  • A lot of debate on this thread, as to squad players. Yes we have to consider the PL / FA / UFEA rules on this, so any painful sales / buy transaction in January / summer 2010 by poch / levy will just have to be accepted. The reality is …. we really have no say in what they do. Albeit the supporters trust meetings with Levy / THFC. Even then levy does what he wants 99% of the time, and poch has to follow on with this… or leave.

    • Block 108 you’ve hit the nail on the head. All suggestions regarding transfers in/out may be interesting, sometimes amusing, but are of no consequence as the opinion only one man counts. For me I take what happens when it happens at THFC. The good and the not so good.

One observation regarding the quality of our playing staff reminds me of when I went to a pre match lunch hosted by John Pratt shortly before the old stadium was demolished. He said something along the lines of ‘ When we played at Old Trafford 60,000 thousand hated me . But when we played at White Hart Lane only 40,000 hated me’. He said it with a smile on his face.

I shall be there today hoping the lads, whoevers picked, do justice to the shirt.

  • Back to the thread topic. We have seen the spurs players very inconsistant last 10 months.. couple of good wins, in a cluster of bad performances. This should now be getting better as the rad star win showed… Red S. were playing very well at their ground for a long time and beat Liverpool, even PSG could not win, and they had no games with multiple goals against them. So a very good team performance by spurs.

I expect poch will play the same team with toby in for dier. Sheffield will have a fast counter attacking as all PL teams now show, so our 4321 shape with Moussa & Tanguy the two breaking up opposition MF play with support from the 3 in front. Lo Celso must start CE benched… Dele back to his position just behind HK10. Sonny wide on left / right. Defence should inc. Foyth RB as I thought he was looking better there than aurier when under pressure bad tackles or penalty give away and NO RED CARDS = fatal errors ! and was moving forwards as well. COYS

  • BB – I remember well the abuse that John Pratt used to get from the terraces of WHL. But he was a regular in a team that I used to love watching week in, week out. Year in, year. out. I think it was a love-hate thing with Pratt. And he stood up strong to the frequent taunts and got on with his job. Never the greatest of players but steady… He was, in the end, one of the longest serving players we have ever had at THFC.

  • Over the many years that I have been reading VS and then posting on it. Most of the very best of Spurs players during this time have suffered abuse from supporters.

Berbatov; Lazy. VDV; Fat and unfit. Modric; Lightweight. Bale; A curse. Eriksen; Lightweight… And, the best of all? Kane; Not good enough for the PL and never will be. Championship Kane!

And this is just a drop in the ocean and the clean and polite version of the endless insults. Of course there are many others that were slated, abused, disliked, hated upon….

Who will be the next Spurs ‘star’ to suffer the slings and arrows of outraged Tottenham fans? Lo Celso? Ndombele? Sessegnon? All three?

  • I hope Poch picks the team that played against Red Star with perhaps Sessegnon rather than Rose. That means a team without players who do not want to be at Spurs next year. At least that will give a team that could be the basis for the FUTURE not the PAST.

  • Back To The Future…

I see that a lot of supporters are keen on seeing virtually the same line-up that thrashed Red Star on Wednesday.

Thing is, we play the Blades today, Saturday. And that is not a good deal of recovery time for all who played that night. But especially those who have not played much at all this season and those that have played more than most.

Sheff Utd have been praised this season for their general fitness, strength, solidarity and staying power. Working very hard and not fading over the 90 minutes.

Given this and the fact that they haven’t played in midweek like us, I think it will probably be necessary for MP to make a few changes. All depending of course on the fitness assessments of all our midweek players. Who’s not quite match fit enough? Who has a slight knock etc? Then there’s the tactical considerations. Playing SU at home in the PL is not the same as RS away in the CL…

I’ll hazard a guess at MP’s line-up but will probably be way out with it…

    Aurier Toby Sanchez Davies
    Winks Ndombele
    Son Eriksen Dele

Sissoko may well play in place of Winks but surely he can’t play in every game? Even Superman needed some time out… And, I’d love to see Lo Celso play, not CE.

Also, I would like to see Foyth again at RB but I haven’t a clue of course. I mean, I have a feeling that my main-man CE will start but if he does, almost every single Spurs supporter will be wondering why?

But, whoever plays has exactly the same task. To win.

    Spurs 4-0 Blades!

  • Slightly off topic (to put it mildly) but I do like to promote Aussie stars …. Sam Kerr scored two goals as the Matildas beat Chile today. She’s scored 40 goals in 40 games for club and country in 2019 (she plays two seasons each year, one in WA and one in the USA). She has won the Golden Boot and Best Player five years in a row in BOTH leagues. It now looks like she is heading to Europe and will be wearing a Chelsea shirt. Bugger!

On a more topical note …. I’m not too concerned about the team selection today except I really want LC to be on the park at the start!

    • Geof…..what a shame if she is going to Chelsea, just the quality we need to start competing with the established WSL sides. On a more positive note our defender Hannah Godfrey made her debut for Scotland yesterday and scored a goal!

  • BB/HT….hahaha! I do also remember those days of the “marmite” player John Pratt, love him or hate him, me I loved him, he always gave his all, like seaside rock he had Spurs written through him, ah! those were the days lol!

Today, I think our leader will make 2 or 3 changes, dropping Dier, Rose and god for bid Lo Celso, thus adding Toby, Davies and should I say it, here goes CE, there I said it, lol.

I still beg him, Poch, do not change a winning team pretty please lol!

Spurs will take the edge off of the Blades today….2 or 3 nil. COYS

  • Yes, HK is due another hat-trick. As is Lucas. Likewise Son. Dele is due another goal to continue his comeback. CE is due a brace and Sissoko is due a shot on target if not just the one goal. One of our defenders is due a nod in from a corner or free-kick. VAR is due to do us some more (controversial) favours and one of our subs today needs to be a star player for all the tomorrows and beyond… Gazza is due another clean sheet… And MP is due a cup or two…

So, if we can get all that is due, then that makes it a scoreline today of at least 12/13-0!

But, I’ll take 4-0 and slag off all the non-scorers for letting us all down! All is fair…

To be honest, I can’t wait for the EJ cull. The slaughter of a squad that doesn’t care. The killing off of those that are killing us! The disease ridden beasts of White Hart Lane Must Die!

Whoops, I carried away there for a minute…. Sorry!

  • HT….lol

EJ did get a bit carried away yesterday but as block 108 said, we can postulate all we like on here but at the end of the day it’s all just personal opinions and will have no effect on the club’s decisions on who plays or who comes and goes.

  • I remember myself saying on the home game Red Star match day thread that I want MP to be bold and start dropping the old school stars that are fading and/or want out. He did, only picking one of them to start. And we thrashed them 5-0!

He was bold again with the away RS match and we thrashed them once more. But it really won’t be that easy for Poch to be doing this in every match this season. Or he will be killing them off one by one, himself.

I think the major factor toward our poor form in the latter part of last season and into this one was mental and physical exhaustion for many of our players. Hence the fall in our apparent lack of effort and the less consistent, cohesive and solid team-play we had come to know. I’m sure there are other factors as well. But I certainly don’t feel that it’s not from the want of trying or caring anymore. Or from a serious lack of talent across the squad… From any of them…

MP’s approach to this transition has to be a considered one. Not too safe and not too drastic. Bold but not hysterical.

But the bottom line is we need to start winning more and more. Picking up the points!

  • I don’t disagree HT, a number of our players have shown signs of burnout going back to when they came back from the world cup in Russia.

  • Whats going on lads n lassies, some sensible posts of late on here, well said, couldn’t agree more.

Lets have a majestic win today, mind any sort of win will do, even a clean sheet,. COYS

  • Today’s ball-kicking bunch of Botch’s Badgers are:

#THFC: Gazzaniga, Aurier, Dier, Sanchez, Davies, Sissoko, Ndombele, Lo Celso, Dele, Son, Kane (C)

  • That’s more like it Poch… I’m happy I got it so wrong…

Looks like a team of winners to me…

Subs: Vorm Toby Foyth Winks Sess Eriksen Lucas

  • The thing that stands out about our starting 11 today is Aurier is the only one who wants to go. This is the way forward. I would have liked to see Foyth start instead of Aurier, but apart from that, i can’t complain.
