Spurs 2-1 Southampton Player Ratings: Bale and Reguilon return to form

|

A vital win for Spurs last night was exactly what the doctor ordered as Southampton surrendered their 0-1 lead as we came back to win on Ryan Mason’s first game as interim manager.

Goals from Gareth Bale and Heung-min Son were enough to reverse the scoreline after Danny Ings put the visitors in front. Here are our player ratings from the game for Spurs.

Hugo Lloris – 8

A fantastic performance from the captain who kept us in the game in the first half with a number of saves including a double save from Mohammed Salisu and then Che Adams. Not at fault for Danny Ings’ goal.

Serge Aurier – 5

Struggled to keep up with Nathan Tella’s pace and was at fault for Ings’ goal as the English striker got away way too easily from Aurier at the corner to head home. Offered lots on the right hand side but didn’t do well with his crossing.

Toby Alderweireld – 6

A quiet performance from the Belgian who didn’t do too much right or wrong but struggled to deal with the movement of Ings and Walcott in the first half.

Eric Dier – 7

Dier, like Alderweireld, had a few shaky moments in the first half, but they both grew into the game especially when Ings went off injured. Loved the confidence of the Englishman to advance forward with the ball and carry it into the Southampton half when a pass wasn’t on.

Sergio Reguilon – 8

A much better performance from Reguilon even though he also started slow, as he failed to cut out a pass to Kyle Walker-Peters, but luckily Lloris was on hand to smother the danger. After that, very encouraging performance on the attack, as he assisted Son’s disallowed goal with a brilliant low ball into the Korean, before winning the penalty that won the game.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – 7

A typical fighting performance from our Danish viking who chased every loose ball, tracked back really well and made some vital interceptions and tackles. Warrior.

Tanguy Ndombele – 5

Not the kind of performance we have come to expect from Ndombele who was taken out of the game for a long time by James Ward-Prowse. He failed to show the trickery and turns to get us up the pitch that he usually does, but we don’t doubt he won’t bounce back.

Giovani Lo Celso – 5

Lo Celso hasn’t had the happiest of times since returning from his latest injury, but one thing you can’t fault is the effort he shows. Him and Erik Lamela right now look like-for-like, and when one of them isn’t performing, it seems like the other will come on and do a better job, but Lo Celso must do better with his passing.

Gareth Bale – 8

A performance reminiscent of Bale from old, the Welshman was the out-ball for Spurs in the first half and dragged us up the pitch with individual brilliance at times. His equaliser in the second-half shifted momentum in our favour and hopefully he picks up where he left off on Sunday.

Heung-min Son – 6

Despite his goal and disallowed goal, Son was pretty much out of the game for the majority of it until the second half. He didn’t do too much wrong, but was very isolated out wide and perhaps him and Lucas should have swapped positions earlier.

Lucas Moura – 5

It was a very disappointing performance from the Brazilian who in recent months has been one of our best players. But as a number nine, it just didn’t work as he was very isolated next to two giant centre-backs in Janik Vestergaard and Jan Bednarek.

Subs: Harry Winks – 6, Erik Lamela – 5, Steven Bergwijn – N/A

Winks was calm and collected in possession, except a few wayward passes, while Erik Lamela’s main contribution was a brilliant run which earned the team a corner. Bergwijn didn’t have enough time to really make an impact but it was nice to see him back on the pitch.
