Southgate insists Downing is not for sale, but from what we’ve heard in the North-East the player is said to be interested in meeting Martin Jol to see what is on offer.
Jol made a move for him earlier this year, but Spurs were given no encouragement by Steve McClarren.
Southgate: ‘I wouldn’t want to lose Stewart at all and I certainly wouldn’t want to lose him to a club like Spurs who are hopefully going to be one of our main rivals next season.’
