Romero deal to be triggered

|

The rather curious case of Cristian Romero’s signature was brought up yesterday afternoon by the Daily Telgraph’s Mike McGrath, who has seemingly answered the long-running question on the lips of many Spurs fans: what is going on with Romero’s contract? Is it permanent, or simply a loan?

Well, McGrath claims to have the answer, reporting that after his impressive displays for Spurs this season, Romero’s loan deal will become a permanent one at some point this month for a fee of £41 million, taking the total fee paid for his services to £47 million. This figure, according to McGrath, is the sum of the fee we will pay this summer and the loan fee we’ve already given Romero’s parent club Atalanta that has covered the past year.

A rather bizarre scenario seems to be finally approaching some resolution – we still don’t know when this deal will be made permanent, but it appears to be sooner rather than later, as has been the case for a while. Nevertheless, McGrath’s news will still come as a relief to many Spurs fans, among whom Romero has enjoyed a cult-hero status for his abrasive character and passionate displays, despite only being at the club for a season.

I for one am delighted that we’ve got him in our ranks – he’s a warrior, and as much as I admire our defensive personnel, there’s no-one like him in our backline. Here’s hoping he can survive a gruelling season and stay fit for as long as the campaign allows.

The great thing about Conte is that he seems to get the best out of players or gets rid. Dier, Davies and even Sesssegnon have improved considerably. Also did Conte know he could make star performers out of Kulusevski and Bentancur.
We are hopefully offloading the unwanted who seemed uncoachable in the Spurs system and unable to progress owing to poor attitude or limited skills.
The Chelsea game might be a defining moment. We lost 3 times last season with hardly a whimper. We should put up a much better fight tomorrow just don’t get wound up with their niggling tactics.

If the lads put in a fight tomorrow and show toughness against the provocations of the Skum, they will be following the example of Romero. tough he is, but I haven’t rated him as dirty. Hope that my evaluation holds up. We need a tough no nonsense person in the back three. Looks like we found that person.

Still waiting for a creative spirit in the midfield. I was taught as a wee one that midfield defines a match–where attacks against are turned into attacks for. But, when the opponent is not turned about in midfield, we need that tough steely presence at the back.

Attackers we now seem to have in spades, but that pivot player who starts quick attacks–we’re still awaiting. With Romero we have a man to clean up when the midfield lets a romp against us get that far.

We’re close to being competitive with any club in the world. I’m hoping that this is the season when other teams fear coming to WHL (?) in the same way that teams feared going to Old Trafford in the Fergie days. We’ll know we are there when the officials make calls showing that they arrive in fear and trembling, too.

“The worst day of my life was when I decided to be a Spurs supporter” — Salman Rushdie

Those of us on this site can understand both quotes, I think.

He lost an eye in the attack on him yesterday and was stabbed seriously in the liver.

    He’s one of us.
    Prayers for our fellow supporter.
I guess he’s finally had a worse day than the one when he chose to give his heart to Spurs.

    Great result by Brentford.

    Unlucky Brighton…totally dominant.

Good to see lesser clubs doing well and playing entertaining football.

To see Brentford embarrass Manure by four goals is a great pleasure. and with only 33% of possession. Excellent, well done lads.

Not quite up there with a new grandchild. Not quite up there with an embarrassin Gooner loss by four goals. And not quite up there with Spurs beating them by four goals, but a true pleasure on a not Saturday in August.

Now let’s see us win by four goals on the morrow.
