Risky Homegrown Option Is More Likely At Spurs Than One Time England Man – Opinion

|

Following the news that Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane would now be out of action until the opening weeks of March following the ankle ligament injury he picked up against Manchester United in our last game, some Spurs fans are championing West Bromwich Albion striker Jay Rodriguez as a suitable replacement.

West Brom are flying high in the Championship table this season following their relegation from the Premier League last year, and the 19-year-old is in good form with a return of 13 goals from 27 appearances but his natural game, for me at least, does not pick him out as a replacement for Kane and somebody who allows the side to continue to play to their strengths.

With a reasonable goalscoring record in the top flight and plenty of willing when it comes to putting in the yards, I can see sense in cover for Son Heung-Min or as an alternative if manager Mauricio Pochettino wanted to tweak our usual style of play, but I can’t see it myself – especially when a deal would take £20million if not more.

I’d think it far more likely we’ll ensure Fernando Llorente remains this window (maybe even bring Vincent Janssen back into the fold) and then Poch would lean more of our youth to provide something different and there are some calls for Troy Parrott to receive some kind of promotion to be an alternative in the interim period, but that would be a risk.
