Return of 20G/10A star could see Spurs make statement win – Opinion

A comeback win against Aston Villa and a draw against Manchester City is a solid start for Spurs in the new season, and it’s made all the better due to the absence of Heung-min Son.

The South Korean superstar was one of Tottenham’s most important players last season as the former Bayer Leverkusen winger hit 20 goals and 10 assists in all competitions for Mauricio Pochettino’s side as numbers from Transfermarkt show.

And now the left-sided attacker is back into the first-team fold after serving his three-game suspension after being shown a straight red card in the penultimate game of last season against Bournemouth, and with Newcastle at home coming up on Sunday, Spurs can make a statement win with Son returning to the squad.

Indeed, last season was Son’s most productive season to date with Spurs as the South Korean international made himself an indispensable member of first-team, making 48 appearances in total for Pochettino’s team, and the attacking quality he posses could result in a big win for Tottenham on the weekend.

With Harry Kane firing in August and new record-signing Tanguy Ndombele settling in well in the starting XI, the return of Son couldn’t have come at a better time to add an extra morale boost to a Spurs side about to face a Newcastle team that are well and truly in the dumps.

Two losses in their opening games of the season, including a 3-1 defeat to newly-promoted Norwich City, has made Toon supporters fear the worst as new manager Steve Bruce has been unable to win over doubters early on, and a trip to Tottenham will be the last thing the former Sheffield Wednesday boss needs, especially with Son back in the team.

A win for Spurs can see them assert their early dominance in the race for a Champions League spot, and with Arsenal facing off against Liverpool a day earlier, three points and a big scoreline could see Tottenham top the league table in week three of the Premier League season if luck falls their way.
