Report: Tottenham ‘trying to nab’ Fulham’s ‘talented’ player in January

|

According to Andy Dillon of The Sun, Tottenham are ‘trying to nab’ Steven Sessegnon. Fulham’s ‘talented’ defender has been on Spurs’ radar this summer, but the Lilywhites had an offer rejected. The Sun believe a follow-up offer is to come in January which could see the 19-year-old reunite with his brother Ryan.

Steven is a right-back who rose through the youth ranks to the Fulham first-team last season and has gone on to make eight appearances in all competitions so far. The Englishman was used sparingly in 2018/19 but is a regular in defence this season – he’s started in Fulham’s last four Championship games.

Tottenham may be planning for the future with Sessegnon, but they also need a player who can make an instant impact. Kieran Trippier’s move to Atletico Madrid has weakened the defence and left Mauricio Pochettino with a problem at right-back.

Serge Aurier is out of favour at Tottenham while Kyle Walker-Peters and Juan Foyth have struggled with injuries. Davinson Sanchez was forced to start at right-back in Spurs’ recent North London Derby. Sessegnon may not be ready to deputise if he was signed in January.

He’s benefitting from getting regular football at Fulham too, so Tottenham need to ponder whether they would sign him for keeps next year or loan him back for the remainder of the campaign.
