Report: Tottenham receive transfer boost over Toby Alderweireld

|

Toby Alderweireld has been linked with a move away from Tottenham all summer, but the 30-year-old looks set to be staying following a report from Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Sport Witness).

AS Roma have been keen on Alderweireld’s signature and lodged a bid in mid-July. Their failure to sign the Belgian international could see them make a move for Liverpool Dejan Lovren, however. He could be available for £11m, which is less than half the price of Alderweireld.

Lovren is said to be open to a move to the Stadio Olimpico after falling out of favour under Jurgen Klopp, so Roma could give up on signing Alderweireld. It’s great news for Tottenham and their supporters.

There’s less than a week on the summer transfer window remaining which could have made it difficult for Tottenham to replace such an important player like Alderweireld. Spurs lost out on William Saliba to Arsenal and don’t appear interested in another central defender.

Mauricio Pochettino will go into next season with Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth at his disposal. Eric Dier could be used as a makeshift centre-back in 2019/20 too.
