Report: Tottenham plot £51.43m winter move for Serie A midfielder inspired by De Rossi and Pogba

Tottenham are reportedly lining up a January move for Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini as the club brace themselves for the departure of Christian Eriksen.

Would Pellegrini be a good replacement for Eriksen?

Yes

No

According to 90min and CalcioMercato via Football Italia, the north London side view Pellegrini as one of a handful of players who could potentially replace Eriksen in the Tottenham squad, with the Italian outlet going a step further and claiming that Spurs are planning a bid upwards of €60m (£51.43m) for the 23-year-old midfielder.

A versatile player that has tended to flourish more in an advanced midfield role as stats as positional records show from Transfermarkt, Pellegrini could be an ideal replacement for Eriksen at Spurs as well as an option out of left-field.

With 90min reporting that the likes of Hakim Ziyech and Bruno Fernandes are also being viewed as potential replacements for the seemingly outbound Danish playmaker, Pellegrini would be a midfielder that, at first glance, wouldn’t be the ideal choice to replace Eriksen giving his goal contribution numbers compared to the two previously mentioned names as stats from WhoScored show.

Yet Pellegrini, who admitted in an interview with UEFA that he inspires his game on former teammate Daniele de Rossi and Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba, can be a player that grows into replacing Eriksen rather than being a like-for-like replacement.

At 23, Pellegrini is one of the youngest players so far to be linked with replacing Eriksen at Spurs, an impressive feat considering attacking midfield isn’t his defined best position as positional records from Transfermarkt show, yet this young age can a blessing in disguise for the Italian and for Tottenham.

Signing the former Sassuolo star would allow Tottenham to morph the midfielder into the Eriksen replacement they want in their fashion, and with Pellegrini being a Serie A regular for several years now, the Italian international could have what it takes to make Tottenham fans forget about Eriksen sooner rather than later.
