Report: Tottenham may have to pay £12.9m to sign FC Porto centre-back

|

According to Portuguese outlet Record (h/t Sport Witness), Tottenham are interested in Diogo Queiros and could battle Ajax for the centre-back’s signature. Queiros has yet to make a senior appearance for FC Porto and might be attainable for considerably less than his £21.5m release clause – the 20-year-old has an asking price closer to £12.9m.

Ajax have reportedly been keen on his signature for some time, but Tottenham have recently stepped up their efforts by scouting him in the UEFA Youth League – he played against Spurs’ u19s in March. Queiros’ lack of first-team football might be a problem, however, as the Londoners need experience at the back should they lose Toby Alderweireld this summer.

Mauricio Pochettino has young talent in defence with Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth, so Queiros might not be the best acquisition for their current situation. The defender has risen through the youth ranks to the fringes of the Porto first-team, but Pochettino would be undertaking a big gamble if Queiros was to be Alderweireld’s successor.

Tottenham will be linked with a host of centre-backs this summer, but it’s hard to see the Porto man being high up on their wishlist.
