Report: Tottenham make decision on potential £62.2m club-record signing

|

Tottenham withdrew their interest in Bruno Fernandes to focus all their attention on Tanguy Ndombele of Olympique Lyonnais and Giovani Lo Celso of Real Betis, but it appears the Lilywhites have made a U-turn on Fernandes and are still looking to procure his signature.

According to James Ducker of the Telegraph, Spurs have engaged in talks with Fernandes’ agent Miguel Pinho over a potential deal, but Manchester United could throw a spanner in the works. The midfielder has been tipped to leave Sporting CP this summer, but his next destination is unknown.

Fernandes has a £62.2m asking price which would make him Tottenham’s record signing, beating out the £42m paid for Davinson Sanchez (Ajax), but the fee could be a point of contention. Spurs officials met Pinho in London on Wednesday, but no deal has been reached.

Mauricio Pochettino is looking to bolster his midfield after failing to replace Mousa Dembele in January, but it’s looking likely that only one of the three transfer-targets (Ndombele, Lo Celso, Fernandes) will be brought in this summer.

Pochettino only has £50m to spend on new recruits, plus whatever he can generate through player sales, so Tottenham can’t afford to make more than one marquee signing in the transfer window.
