Report: Toby Alderweireld reveals whether he will stay at Tottenham next season

|

Toby Alderweireld says he’ll be staying at Tottenham next season. The 30-year-old could be on his way out this summer if a suitor matches his £25m release clause, but he’s yet to receive any bids matching the asking price.

Alderweireld has one year left on his contract and isn’t close to putting pen to paper on an extension. He could leave for nothing in 2020 if he’s not sold this summer, but a lack of interest could see the Belgian international staying.

When asked if he will be a Tottenham player in 2019/20, Alderweireld said to the Telegraph: “Yes. That’s my focus in football. Everything can go quick but all I’m doing is focusing on Spurs and being fit for the start of the season.

“I think (Mauricio Pochettino) knows I am committed to the club and the team. Again, (a club triggering the clause) can happen but my focus is on Spurs and in my head I will be playing for Spurs. I try to deliver the job I need to do – I’m happy and that’s it.”

Since joining Spurs from Atletico Madrid in 2015, Alderweireld has gone on to make 159 appearances in all competitions, scoring and creating nine goals. The centre-back has been a regular alongside fellow countryman Jan Vertonghen, but there were fears that his time at Tottenham had come to an end.

Alderweireld hasn’t agreed a contract extension and could have left for nothing in 2019 if Spurs hadn’t triggered a 12-month option. Nevertheless, the 30-year-old seems keen to stay and is focused on giving his all in his final season at the club. It’s great news for supporters and saves Mauricio Pochettino signing a replacement.
