Report: ‘Stunned’ midfielder ‘will leave’ Tottenham after being ‘frozen out’ by Pochettino

|

According to Charlie Wyett of The Sun, Josh Onomah ‘will leave’ Tottenham this summer after being ‘frozen out’ by Mauricio Pochettino. The midfielder is said to be ‘stunned’ at the decision to demote him to the reserves and could consider a move to Germany due to increased interest from Bundesliga sides – Borussia Monchengladbach, 1.FSV Mainz 05, Augsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt.

Onomah may be shocked at being exiled from the first-team, but Pochettino’s decision isn’t that much of a surprise given his lack of Tottenham outings. Since rising through the youth ranks to the first-team in 2015, the 22-year-old has racked up only 807 minutes of football.

The England u21 international has stiff competition in midfield too. Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Harry Winks can all play in Onomah’s preferred position so it’s hard to see him getting the nod from Pochettino. His last appearance for Tottenham was against Watford on April 8, 2017, so it’s not a shock that he could be moved on this summer.

The £10m-rated midfielder has spent the last two years on loan at Aston Villa (August 4, 2017 – May 31, 2018) and Sheffield Wednesday (August 31, 2018 – May 31, 2019) – two sides who were in the Championship at the time – so it’s clear that he’s not on the level to stay at Tottenham.
