Report: Spurs Women 5-0 London City Lionesses

|

Tottenham Hotspur Women made it a perfect weekend of FA Cup action for the club by securing their passage into the fifth round of the FA Cup with a resounding 5-0 victory over Women’s Championship side London City Lionesses at Brisbane Road earlier on Sunday afternoon.

Although much had been made in the build-up to the game of the possibility of an upset given both side’s contrasting form, with Spurs having lost their last 5 WSL matches, and London City currently top of the Championship, this was a walk in the park for Rehanne Skinner’s side.

The hosts took the lead through Bethany England, who bagged her second goal for the club on 11 minutes when she headed in Rosella Ayane’s cross, and Spurs doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time with a goal from another new signing, as Mana Iwabuchi scored on her first start for the club had the freedom of London in the visitors’ penalty area to hit an effort that deflected off Lionesses’ captain Harley Bennett.

Drew Spence then scored her second goal in a week after following up Eva Summanen’s parried effort 3 minutes after the interval. There was more misfortune for Lionesses’ skipper Bennet when a cross inadvertently hit her and flew over Shae Yanez in the visitors’ goal on 65 minutes.

There was still time for a fifth, as some poor play at the back from the visitors culminated in the icing on the top for Spurs when Nikola Karczewska squared the ball for Summanen to tap in the easiest of finishes to put the gloss on a very comfortable afternoon for Spurs.
