Report: Spurs bid rejected by teenage prospect set for Premier League switch

|

Tottenham Hotspur have lost out to Brighton & Hove Albion in the race to sign Wigan Athletic product Jensen Weir, according to Alan Nixon.

It has been claimed that a deal for Weir to move to the AMEX Stadium in the summer has been reached, with the Seagulls agreeing to pay an upfront fee of £500,000 to land the Warrington-born midfielder after he snubbed a potential move to north London.

Spurs are said to have offered Wigan more than Brighton in the hope of usurping Graham Potter’s side in the hunt for the youth prospect, but missed out as Weir has chosen to take the next step of his career on the south coast having played just one game in the Championship for Wigan to date.

The bid tabled by Daniel Levy had the same upfront instalment as Brighton’s allegedly accepted offer, though would have carried ‘significantly’ more in potential add-ons.

Should Levy focus on young players this summer?

Yes

No

Nixon had previously reported Tottenham’s interest in Weir when he claimed Spurs had asked for more information on the England U18 international’s situation after the Latics entered into administration, hoping that their crisis would result in lower transfer fees.

Levy will now have to reassess his options for strengthening Spurs’ youth ranks in the coming months, should the Tottenham chief continue to place an emphasis on young talents that can develop in north London before stepping up into the senior fold in the years to come.

Weir had demonstrated in parts his potential for the future during the 2019/20 campaign, which saw the 18-year-old net once in three FA Youth Cup appearances – coming against Tottenham’s U18s last August – while featuring from the bench in Wigan’s Carabao Cup exit at home to Stoke City in the First Round.
