Report: Out-of-contract Tottenham star rinsed by World Cup winner for being ‘not good enough’

|

Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus has claimed that Tottenham star Christian Eriksen is not the type of player that Bayern Munich need and a move to the Bundesliga champions would be a surprise to him.

Speaking to Sport1 via The Evening Standard, the West Germany World Cup winner tore into the Spurs playmaker, criticising Eriksen’s style of play and lack of athleticism that Matthaus believes won’t be suited the Bayern Munich brand of football that is renowned throughout the game.

Matthaus said: “I’ve been following the player (Eriksen) for a long time, and so far in 2019, he has disappointed me. A transfer to Bayern wouldn’t make sense in my view and would be very surprising.

“If he’s not enough for Tottenham, he’s not good enough for Bayern. (Club president) Uli Hoeness has also said before that Bayern doesn’t need any substitutes. Eriksen is a fine technician, a typical No.10, but he’s too slow, and Niko Kovac likes fast players. For me, Eriksen is not the kind of player who makes the difference at the highest level.”

Eriksen’s future at Tottenham has been one of the most talked-about subjects surrounding the north London club this season, with the playmaker’s contract set to expire next summer, with AS reporting that Spurs have made one final offer to the Dane for him to remain at the Premier League club amid interest from Real Madrid.

Indeed, it is becoming more apparent that Eriksen will be leaving the Premier League side in the next 12 months, yet with these comments from Matthaus seemingly damaging the Danish international’s reputation and price tag, a move to another club could be harder now for the Tottenham attacking midfielder, who stated in July to The Telegraph that he was keen for a new challenge after reaching the Champions League final with Tottenham last season.
