Jose Mourinho is set to dramatically overhaul Tottenham’s defence in the summer transfer window with the Portuguese manager set to splash out £120m on new players.
The Express report the Spurs boss plans to ‘rip up’ the ageing area of the squad with the likes of Benfica and Bournemouth defenders Ruben Dias and Nathan Ake already being targeted by Mourinho as potential replacements for some players, with Jan Vertonghen yet to pen a new deal with the club with six months on his current contract remaining.
Although this season has seen Japhet Tanganga emerge as a potential new defensive hero for Tottenham after starting in the past few weeks for the club as well as Ryan Sessegnon beginning to feature regularly for Spurs as stats from Transfermarkt show, Mourinho is also seemingly interested in improving the fullback area of the squad.
Is the defence Jose Mourinho's main priority this summer?
As per the report, Norwich youngster Max Aarons and OGC Nice star Youcef Atal are all on Tottenham’s radar as Mourinho aims to move on Serge Aurier, with Leicester City star Ben Chilwell also being monitored by Tottenham as the England international continues to be touted with a move away from the King Power Stadium.
Tottenham’s defence has been a problem area for the majority of the season even with the arrival of Mourinho, with stats from the Premier League’s official website showing that Spurs have kept the joint-fewest clean sheets this campaign, with the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and West Ham all keeping more than the north London club.
The backline for Spurs needs repairs, and with Daniel Levy seemingly keen on giving Mourinho the funds to improve the defence, Tottenham could have a busy summer that would see multiple new names come through the door.
