Report: Mourinho interested in reuniting with former player shipped away from the Premier League

|

Jose Mourinho is keen to bring former player Chris Smalling to Tottenham with the Spurs manager eager to improve on the north London club’s defence in the summer transfer window.

Corriere Dello Sport report that Spurs, as well as Everton, are both interested in signing the Manchester United centre-back, with the Red Devils seemingly open on selling the 30-year-old defender who this season was shipped off to AS Roma for the year, where Smalling has surprisingly thrived at.

The Express reported last week that Mourinho is eager to spend big on rebuilding the Tottenham defence in the summer, with Jan Vertonghen looking increasingly likely to leave north London with the Portuguese manager also keen on bolstering the club’s fullback options with Serge Aurier yet to impress this season and Ben Davies’ injury problems causing issues.

Is the defence Jose Mourinho's main priority this summer?

Yes

No

Although Smalling had a mixed few years with Man United before making the move to Italy, the English defender has found a new lease of life at Roma this season, with the former Fulham defender establishing himself as one of the club’s most important first-team players and a key clog in Paulo Fonseca’s plan to get the historic Roman side back into the Champions League.

With the Man United defender playing every minute for Roma since his arrival as stats from WhoScored show, Smalling has certainly made a name for himself in Serie A this season, and with Mourinho having previously managed the England international, the 30-year-old centre-back could be open to a reunion with one of his former managers.

Smalling has proven his worth this season whilst on loan, and with his parent club willing to sell in the summer, Tottenham could well find themselves as the front-runners for the Man United defender who has been reborn this campaign.
