Report: Mourinho eyeing up replacement for key player who sent Spurs to Champions League final

|

Jose Mourinho is reportedly keen on signing a backup striker to Harry Kane after Tottenham failed to bring in a replacement for Fernando Llorente in the summer transfer window.

The Telegraph report that the Spurs manager will be looking to sign backup attacker in January after the club failed to replace Llorente earlier in the year as the Spaniard signed for Napoli after his contract with Tottenham expired in the summer.

There were expectations that Troy Parrott would be promoted to the first-team to serve this role, but as stats from Transfermarkt show, the 17-year-old striker is yet to play a minute of Premier League of Champions League football for the Tottenham senior squad.

Is a spot in the top four still achievable?

Yes

No

Although The Guardian reported that Mourinho won’t be handed any money to spend in January, the aforementioned Telegraph report claims that the Portuguese manager will be looking to sell some players on before looking to bring any new names in, with a new defender also reportedly on the former Manchester United boss’ radar.

The lack of a true backup striker at Tottenham has caused the club some problems this season, with Kane starting in all but two games this season for Spurs as stats from Transfermarkt show, and an attacker that can fill in for the England captain will be an important signing for Mourinho.

Last season saw Llorente play a vital part in Spurs making the Champions League final, with the veteran striker scoring in games against Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City that set Tottenham on the road to Madrid, and a good backup could be the difference between the north London side this campaign claiming a spot in the Premier League top-four or a return to the Europa League.

Kane requires a striker that can come into the Spurs XI when he isn’t at his best and needs a break from the first-team, and Mourinho has the insight and pulling power to be able to attract a good name to fill out this role.
