Report: Ex-Spurs star urges club to sign “world-class” ace that would “appease the crowd”

Darren Bent has egged Tottenham on to sign Barcelona attacker Philippe Coutinho in the summer transfer window.

The former Spurs star admitted to Football Insider that he believes Tottenham need a world-class signing to not only get the fans back on Jose Mourinho’s side, but to also send a message to other clubs in the Premier League that they are taking the game seriously, and Coutinho could be that man.

The former Liverpool ace is expected to leave Barcelona in the summer transfer window, as reported by AS, after just one full season with the Catalan club after Coutinho failed to make an impact with the La Liga giants.

The Brazilian is currently out on loan with Bayern Munich for the season, and for Bent, a player like the Barcelona playmaker could be what Tottenham need if they are to get back on track after a poor 2019/20 campaign.

Would you have liked to have seen Philippe Coutinho at Tottenham?

Yes

No

The former Sunderland man said about Spurs signing Coutinho: “He’s that world-class name that people will be like: ‘Okay, Spurs are taking it seriously.’ You look at last season, we thought they were linked with a couple of superstars – Coutinho, [Paulo] Dybala – and they couldn’t get it over the line. Were they really interested in getting these players in or was it just to appease the crowd? But obviously, if they can somehow get this guy in the door, then what a signing that is.”

The summer transfer window is expected to be an important one for Tottenham, with The Express reporting that Spurs will have well over £100m to spend on new signings, and Mourinho could be plotting to add a world-class name like Coutinho to his ranks as the Portuguese manager aims to bring success back to north London.
