“Releasing Him Was The Wrong Decision” – Spurs Have A Real “Talent” On Trial According To Some Fans At His Former Club

Over the weekend, Tottenham Hotspur fans discovered that we had taken former Southend United goalkeeper Ted Smith on for a small trial period at the club during our pre-season preparations.

Spurs Trial Harry Winks’ Former England Under 20 Colleague

The former England Under 20 international joined our Under 23 setup and took in our friendly against Ebbsfleet on Saturday. With his breakthrough year coming in the 2016/17 campaign where he made 21 appearances for the side, he had slipped down the pecking order in recent years and game time had been far harder to come by as they moved back to experience given his age, but he is undoubtedly a talent.

In many ways, it’s a no brainer from Spurs’ perspective and just gandering around the internet as I tend to do, despite being released at the end of his contract at Roots Hall, plenty seem to think that was a mistake and that they should’ve held onto him and giving him better match minutes moving forward.

Southend boss Kevin Bond is quoted as saying.

“Ted’s an excellent trainer and a great boy but he needs to be playing regular first-team football which I have no doubt he will find. I would like to wish him the very best of luck and thank him for his service to the club. He has been at Southend for a long period of time. But, mainly due to circumstances, he has found himself down the pecking order with three frontline goalkeepers around the first-team squad.”
