The season of 2016/17 was another year of Premier League record matchers and makers and by the Premier League’s own standards, here’s how the record books altered by the end of the season.
The Premier League.com have put together a list of some of the biggest and most memorable records that were broken this year, or simply just matched from the 2015/16 season and here they are.
Match Week 1:
The game between Bournemouth (1) and Manchester United (3) saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan become the first ever Armenian to play in the rebranded top flight in England. In doing so he took the total number of different nationalities to spend time in the Premier League to 112.
Match Week 2:
The game between Swansea City (0) and Hull City (2) saw Hull become only the second side during the history of the Premier League to register two wins in the opening two matches following promotion from the Championship. The last side to achieve that was Bolton Wanderers in the 2001/02 campaign.
Match Week 4:
The game between Manchester United (1) and Manchester City (2) saw Pep Guardiola become the fourth manager in the Premier League, and the first outside of Chelsea, to win his first four matches in the competition. He followed in the footsteps of Jose Mourinho, Gus Hiddink and Carlo Ancelotti.
Match Week 5:
The game between West Bromwich Albion (4) and West Ham (2) saw Nacer Chadli score twice and create two assists to become the first West Brom player to be involved in four goals in a single Premier League match.
Match Week 8:
The game between Manchester City (1) and Everton (1) saw Maarten Stekelenburg save two penalties in the game. It was the eighth time a goalkeeper has saved two penalties in a single game in a Premier League match.
Match Week 10:
The game between Middlesbrough (2) and Bournemouth (0) saw Stuart Downing register the third longest gap between Premier League goals for the same side with a span of 3,093 days.
Match Week 16:
The game between West Bromwich Albion (3) and Swansea City (1) saw Salomon Rondon become only the second player to score a hattrick of headers, following on from Duncan Ferguson in the game between Everton and Bolton Wanderers back in December 1997.
Match Week 19:
The game between Burnley (4) and Sunderland (1) saw Andre Gray complete his non league rise by registering his first Premier League hattrick. In doing so he also became the first Burnley player to hit a hattrick in the Premier League.
The game between Watford (1) and Tottenham Hotspur (4) saw Harry Kane continue his own incredible individual form over the last few seasons and he registered his 59th Premier League goal in 100 games. That equalled where Thierry Henry stood at the same 100 games stage.
Match Week 20:
The game between Everton (3) and Southampton (0) saw Leighton Baines follow in the footsteps of John Terry and David Unsworth as he became only the third defender to score 30 Premier League goals.
The game between Sunderland (2) and Liverpool (2) saw Jermain Defoe become the fourth player to score 10+ goals in 10 different Premier League campaigns. He followed Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard in that honour.
The game between Bournemouth (3) and Arsenal (3) saw Arsenal come from three goals down for the first time since the league was rebranded.
Match Week 21:
The game between West Ham (3) and Crystal Palace (0) saw Michail Antonio become the first West Ham player to register three assists in a single match since Paolo Di Canio notched up three against Coventry City back in April 2000.
Match Week 22:
The game between Stoke City (2) and Manchester United (2) saw Wayne Rooney become the outright all time Premier League away scorer with a total of 88.
Match Week 23:
The game between Stoke City (1) and Everton (1) saw Peter Crouch become the 26th different player to reach 100 Premier League goals and he’s also the oldest to so aged 36 years and two days.
Match Week 24:
The game between Leicester City (0) and Manchester United (3) saw Zlatan Ibrahimovic become the older player to reach 15 Premier League goals in a single season. He was aged 35 years and 125 days young.
Match Week 29:
The game between Everton (4) and Hull City (0) saw Romelu Lukaku become the fourth player ever to reach the tally of 80 Premier League goals before turning the age of 24. He joins Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler and Wayne Rooney in that achievement.
The game between Manchester City (1) and Liverpool (1) saw James Milner break the record for the most Premier League matches scored in without tasting defeat. A record previously held by Darius Vassell.
Match Week 31:
The game between Leicester City (2) and Sunderland (0) saw manager Craig Shakespeare become only the third manager to win his opening five Premier League matches. Carlo Ancelotti achieved just that in 2009 with Pep Guardiola following in 2016 – both of those won their first six in total.
Match Week 32:
The game between Stoke City (1) and Liverpool (2) saw Philippe Coutinho become the top scoring Brazilian in Premier League history. The record was previously held by Juninho with 29.
The game between Tottenham Hotspur (4) and Watford (o) saw Son Hueng-min become the first South Korean to score double figures in a single season in the Premier League.
Match Week 33:
The game between Everton (3) and Burnley (1) saw Everton register eight straight wins at Goodison Park for the first time in the Premier League. It equalled their best top flight run of eight wins in a row achieved back in 1990.
The game between Stoke City (3) and Hull City (1) saw Marko Arnautovic register his 22nd Premier League goal, beating the record set by Austrian Paul Scharner.
Match Week 34:
The game between Burnley (0) and Manchester United (2) saw Wayne Rooney score in his 149th different Premier League match, drawing level with Frank Lampard and Andy Cole. Only Alan Shearer has scored in more different games with a record of 190.
Match Week 35:
The game between Sunderland (0) and Bournemouth (1) saw Joshua King net his 15th goal of the season. In doing so he became the second Norwegian to hit that number following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 1996/97 and 2001/02.
Match Week 36:
The game between Chelsea (3) and Middlesbrough (0) saw Cesc Fabregas become the first player to record 10 or more assists in six different Premier League campaign.
Match Week 37:
The game between Stoke City (1) and Arsenal (4) saw Alexis Sanchez register a 15th away league goal and only Kevin Phillips with 16 back in 1999/00 has scored more in a single campaign.
The game between West Ham (0) and Liverpool (4) saw Liverpool notch up their 52nd win at different stadiums in the Premier League which is a new record in the top flight.
The game between Tottenham Hotspur (2) and Manchester United (1) saw Tottenham go unbeaten at home for the first time in the league since since 1964/65.
Match Week 38:
The game between Southampton (0) and Stoke City (1) saw Peter Crouch become the first player to score 50 goals with his head in the Premier League.
The game between Chelsea (5) and Sunderland (1) saw Chelsea become the first side to register 30 wins in a single Premier League season as they charged to the title.
The game between Manchester United (2) and Crystal Palace (0) saw United field their youngest ever Premier League starting eleven with an average age of 22 years and 284 days. It was the third youngest team ever fielded in Premier League history.
The game between Liverpool (3) and Middlesbrough (0) saw Georgino Wijnaldum go down in history as nobody else has scored more home goals without finding the net away from home. He sits on 17 for Newcastle and Liverpool.
The game between Hull City (1) and Tottenham Hotspur (7) saw Harry Kane become only the fifth player in history to pick up successive top scorer gongs.
