Ramos – Here for the Long Haul?

No sensible right thinking football fan can deny that Juande Ramos appears to be building something special at Tottenham Hotspur.

The hardcore Martin Jol supporters may not like to acknowledge the fact, but he is undoubtedly proving to be a step up in class from the regime we had previously.

Ramos’ profile as a trophy winning manager of European renown lends the club great stature in it’s relentless pursuit of the best players plying their trade in the Northern hemisphere.

This image and approach coupled with an astute Chairman in Daniel Levy who backs his man 100% spiritually and financially can only bode well for the club’s future as long as the status quo remains.

However, a footballing Shangri-La even when achieved only sadly ever remains in a fragile state due to pressures constantly brought to bear by outside factors.

Ramos and Levy have invested heavily in the team and will continue to do so in the short term. They both share a vision of where they want to get to and we fans fervently cross our fingers(and everything else!)that this dream can be ultimately realised.

Unfortunately, it is widely known that success in any walk of life comes at a price. Not just on the pitch, but also in human terms.

If Ramos should, even with the luxury of top class players, fail to bring some success in the near future, then it will only be a matter of time before the Board of THFC start casting their far flung net once more for his potential successor.

I, personally speaking, think he will be given this season and the next to make some sort of impact at the top of our game.

Alternatively, should he turn out to be too successful, then the wolves will start circling in the form of the top European clubs who may feel they could do better than they are at present with new blood at the helm.

I am not as worried about this scenario occurring because he will find it extremely difficult to walk away from something beautiful that he himself has had a major part in creating.

He also knows he would be worshipped by the fans and also be very lucratively rewarded for his services as indeed he currently is.

Ideally, we crave continuity and would like him to build a dynasty similar to what Ferguson has at Utd.We would want him as he gets older to become so settled and comfortable in the job that it becomes like wearing an old pair of carpet slippers.

Any thoughts that he may then have held of testing his mettle in a different league or with a different club will by that time have surely slipped away.

The only other worrying possibility to consider is that ENIC may sell out at some stage when they deem an offer appropriate.

There would be no guarantees that the new Chairman or indeed the parent company would be anything like as supportive or appreciative of his efforts with him not being ‘their man’.

It would certainly be sheer madness to pull the rug from under Ramos’ feet in those circumstances if he is continuing to produce the goods.

Although, undoubtedly if he got the impression that he was not as loved by the powers that be as much as he previously was, the decision to stay or go would rest entirely in his hands for him to exercise as he would see fit.
