Premier League rivals make move, freeing path for £40.5m-rated man to join Spurs – report

Tottenham Hotspur could be on the brink of making a move for Manchester City John Stones, if Pep Guardiola opts to strengthen his defence in the summer, as per reports.

The Daily Star claims that the 39-capped England man could be on his way out of the Etihad, with Pep Guardiola looking to strengthen his defence in the upcoming window.

Leonardi Bonucci is one man to be linked to the current Premier League champions and considering that Stones has found it difficult to get into the side when Aymeric Laporte has been out for most of this season, that could signal the end his City career.

After being bought for £47.5m by Everton in the summer of 2016, he has gone onto win a lot in two Premier Leagues, the FA Cup twice and the League Cup, but it’s his lack of appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side in this campaign which makes it seem as if his time is coming to an end.

Would you like to see us sign John Stones?

Yes please

No thanks

While he’s picked up a few minor injuries, he still has only made 12 Premier League appearances all season and has not managed 1000 minutes.

That’s not to say he wouldn’t be a decent signing, though. For a player of 25-years, he has a remarkable amount of experience at the very highest level, having played in World Cup and Champions League finals, as well as obviously winning England’s premier competition.

Statistics wise, he’s not looked great. He averages 1.2 tackles, 0.7 interceptions, 1.4 clearances and 0.1 blocks per game, with all of those statistics being lower than Nicolas Otamendi and Fernandinho respectively, so you can see why he may be the lower choice for City.

Perhaps Guardiola willing to let go of Stones is proof that he has given up on the player. While his age to Spurs might be an attraction, it could be seen as the age where Guardiola does not believe he will keep improving, therefore he is willing to allow him to leave.

With Vertonghen likely to leave in the summer, there’s no doubt more defensive cover is needed. However, with the defender rated at £40.5m by Transfermarkt, there may be better options out there for that kind of value.
