Pochettino must use player with world-class potential at Tottenham more often next season – Opinion

Davinson Sanchez has all the tools to become a world-class player for Tottenham Hotspur in the very near future.

The Colombian international showed exactly what he can produce on the field over the weekend in their Copa America match with Argentina when he managed to keep the likes of Sergio Aguero and Lionel Messi at bay for the duration of the game.

He may have had an excellent debut year at Spurs, however, Mauricio Pochettino appeared to opt for the Belgian partnership of Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld for much of the previous campaign.

But, with the future of the latter of the duo in doubt – because of that pesky £25million release clause (BBC) – it would not be a surprise to see Sanchez play a bigger role for us moving forward and that is only a good thing for us.

Still only 23-years-old, the £42million (Guardian) transfer fee that we spent on him to sign him from Ajax in the summer of 2017 could end up looking like a snip if he continues to perform as well as everybody knows he can.

According to stats collected by WhoScored, Sanchez made an average of 1.6 tackles per game and 1.3 interceptions across 23 Premier League appearances last season – hugely encouraging stats for a young defender in his second year in England’s notoriously difficult league. It would not be out of the question to suggest that those figures would increase as he gets older and the more he plays.

If his performance for Colombia in the Copa America did anything, perhaps, it proved Tottenham truly have a world-class defender on their hands and one who is destined to be one of the greats at the back, therefore, Pochettino must look at using him more often next season.
