Pochettino Denies There Was An “Issue” Behind Unexpected Squad Selection For Villa

|

Plenty of Tottenham Hotspur fans were curious at the weekend as manager Mauricio Pochettino chose to leave out influential centre-half Jan Vertonghen for our opening Premier League clash against Aston Villa.

Pochettino’s interview with the BBC following the game was quite tetchy when the subject of Vertonghen came up as he was asked the direction question of whether there was a problem with the 32-year-old Belgian international.

Poch naturally denied that there was, but did seem irked by the question but, at least to me, his comments took on a different feel once I noticed that Vertonghen was in the stands alongside Ryan Sessegnon and Dele Alli.

“With all the players fit you struggle to find a starting XI. This is my sixth season, I think everyone knows me. I am going to play the players who I believe deserve to play. There is not any issue, only my decision was to play with Toby and Davinson. We have more than 25 players and everyone needs to understand we have plenty of good players in every position.”

For me, I think Poch was still amped from the game and simply didn’t like his decision on the starting XI being questions, especially with such a strong inference that there was an off pitch problem with the experienced defender.

That at least seems more logical to me, than Poch being irked for other reasons.
