As yesterday’s buildup to tonight’s Champions League clash with Inter Milan continued, the dramatic growth of young Tottenham Hotspur centre-half Juan Foyth became a topic of conversation for manager Mauricio Pochettino and the press.
The 20-year-old former Estudiantes player has had to be patient following his arrival at the club back at the beginning of the 2017/18 campaign, but to date he boasts 12 senior starting appearances for the club.
His Premier League showings have come this season as he filled in at the heart of defence and he’s had a down – Wolverhampton Wanderers and the penalties – and he’s definitely had an up – he maiden winner against Crystal Palace.
The lad, simply put, hasn’t let us down and he’s now represented his country as well which is a further boost for him.
He won’t be on show on Wednesday night though, Poch didn’t include him in our CL squad and the gaffer was quoted by Sky Sports as admitting it was a ‘regret’.
“That is so painful. It’s a mistake we made that at this level of football we cannot repeat again. We need to find a solution. At the start of the season I was disappointed because the squad was so big. People say, ‘You were the only club not to sign any players’. But to sign another player means to put another off the Champions League list. We needed an English player but it was impossible. It is painful to have a player off the list but we will finish the group stage soon and hope that in March we can do a new list and we can include him on it.”
Good words from the gaffer really, but he says himself you can’t predict the future when making decisions and whilst Foyth has always been highly rated, few probably expected him to slot in as he has done so I can’t agree it was a mistake.
A regret yes, but hindsight is 20/20, the only true mistakes are when you should already know better.
