Poch Looking To The Future With Spurs Team Selection Against Leicester

|

Mauricio Pochettino says he is caught between naming a strong starting eleven against Leicester in a bid to finish third, or naming some younger players at Wembley on Sunday.

At his pre-match press conference today, the Argentine seemed to be angling towards picking a younger team, with Juan Foyth and Kyle Walker-Peters poised to make starts against the Foxes:

“There are many temptations to give the possibilities to many players to play that don’t play consistently during the season but at the same time, it is in our hands to finish third.”

“I think Juan Foyth deserves to play and he is doing fantastic and I will repeat that so maybe, I am thinking, maybe it is is not crazy to see a player like him or Kyle Walker-Peters in the starting XI.”

I am pretty much in agreement with Poch on this one. With a Champions League place secured, it seems like the best time to give the duo a go. There will be some fans who believe that finishing third is more important, but we need to see these players given chances in the first team:

Kyle Walker-Peters

With Serge Aurier’s travails at right back, you would have thought the 21-year-old would have been given more opportunities to impress, but he has only played eight times this campaign, despite starting the first league game of the season against Newcastle.

At the time, the manager was keen to stress the full-back was not ready. Still, the Under 20 World Cup winner is not a teenager, he is just a year younger than Dele Alli, and it’s important for him to get more game time.

The only way he can get ready to play in the Premier League is to actually play more regularly, so I do expect him to start.

Juan Foyth

Pochettino is a massive fanĀ of his compatriot, but he has not played a single minute in the Premier League this season. It is the perfect opportunity to give him his league debut on Sunday.

Some have actually been advocating that he should play in central midfield, after having started his career there, but I think the boss is set on him following in his footsteps to be a centre-half.

The adaptation period from Argentinian football to the English game was always going to be a long one, but at some point, he needs to be thrown in the deep end. From what I’ve seen of him, there is some great potential there, but it would be good to see a bit more of him.
