Opinion: Why Tottenham won’t pay £65m for 24-year-old in January despite reports

|

Tottenham were linked with a move for Bruno Fernandes over the summer but ended up signing Tanguy Ndombele from Olympique Lyonnais and Giovani Lo Celso from Real Betis. According to Ojogo, the 24-year-old could be on the move from Sporting Lisbon in January due to his club’s financial woes, but it’s hard to see Spurs landing his signature.

Fernandes has a £65m asking price and interest from Manchester United, so Tottenham would have a tough task bringing the midfielder to North London. They’re overstocked in the engine room too – Ndombele, Lo Celso, Harry Winks, Moussa Sissoko, Eric Dier, Victor Wanyama – so one or two players would have to leave before a replacement is considered.

Fernandes has impressed this season, scoring and creating 15 goals in 17 appearances as captain, but his time at the Estádio José Alvalade could be up. Sporting can pay off their debt through his sale, but it remains to be seen whether a club will match his asking price in January as he won’t come cheap.

Tottenham aren’t going to break their transfer record to strengthen an area they’re already overstocked in, so it’s unlikely that Fernandes will be on his way to London.
