Opinion: Transfer-target won’t join Tottenham, arrival would anger Alderweireld and Eriksen

|

Tottenham have been linked with Gareth Bale all season, with the 29-year-old rumoured to be unhappy at Real Madrid. Bale is reportedly keen to move away from the Santiago Bernabeu, but there’s little to no chance he will return to Spurs this summer as Daniel Levy won’t sanction such an expensive transfer.

Real paid £85m in 2013 to sign the Welsh international and would likely want most of that money back if they were to sell him. Bale has three years left on his contract with Los Blancos and has averaged a goal/assist every 99 minutes in all competitions.

The world-class forward has a market value of £68m and currently earns £350k-per-week after tax. Tottenham’s highest-earner is Harry Kane who could take home up to £200k-per-week with bonuses – 57% of Bale’s salary. If Spurs matched Bale’s current deal until 2022, they’d spend in excess of £120m on his transfer fee and wages.

Questions would be asked why Tottenham are holding out on Toby Alderweireld (who is demanding £180k-per-week) and Christian Eriksen’s (who is demanding his wages be doubled) contracts when they’re willing to spend large sums on the Real Madrid forward too. Bale contributed 114 goals in 203 games for Spurs, has 165 goals/assists in 224 games for Real and boasts 31 goals in 75 for Wales. Unfortunately, a deal won’t be worth the hassle for Mauricio Pochettino.
