Opinion: Transfer decision could spell uncertainty for £60k-per-week Tottenham man

|

Tottenham are nearing a move for Tanguy Ndombele and are close to finalising negotiations with Olympique Lyonnais, but the decision to sign the midfielder could spell the end for Eric Dier. The £60k-per-week man was short of playing time due to injury woes last season, but he may fall down the pecking order in 2019/20 due to the added competition.

Victor Wanyama is another midfielder who could have an uncertain future on account of Ndombele’s eventual arrival. The Daily Mail say Tottenham are open to offers for both players this summer. Dier made 20 Premier League appearances last season but only seven came in 2019.

With Mauricio Pochettino already preferring Moussa Sissoko and Harry Winks in midfield, Dier could be reduced to a squad player next season. The 25-year-old’s future has been up in the air for months, but it’s hard to see Tottenham selling him. Dier could be a makeshift option at centre-back next season amid Toby Alderweireld’s uncertain future and is still admired by his manager.

The England international should start the 2019/20 campaign fully fit which should improve the level of his performances for Tottenham. Dier is unlikely to be a regular in the starting lineup when Ndombele arrivals, but he’s worth holding onto.
