We all know what happened last summer. Tottenham fans everywhere were left fuming when the transfer deadline came around and they hadn’t signed a single player. This summer, though, could be worse than that depending on how their final week goes, despite splurging on Tanguy Ndombele.

Mauricio Pochettino has seen three of his senior players sold in 2019. Kieran Trippier, Mousa Dembele and Vincent Janssen have all left, creating a gap at full-back and a need for a deputy striker. In truth, Janssen was hardly part of the squad, but with Fernando Llorente also departing that need for a second striker is still there.

Ndombele has stepped into Dembele’s role, but the fans want more. The club are desperate for a couple more names to come into the squad but so far it just has not happened. That’s where the fans anger is now starting to come in, as, with a week left for transfers to be completed, Daniel Levy is apparently letting the fans down.

Pochettino can only work with what he’s got and in his five years as the Lilywhites’ head coach he’s had them constantly and consistently punching above their weight, finishing in the top four four times in a row, reaching back-to-back FA Cup semi-finals and a Champions League final as well as securing rare wins at Stamford Bridge, The Emirates, Old Trafford and The Etihad.

For that level of performance to be bettered, Levy will need to add to the squad. We all know it, and this summer was supposed to see a number of top players come in on a mega-spend. However, now we approach the deadline day with more holes in the squad than marquee signings, and there is mass outrage from the fans.

Pre-season has delivered some memorable wins against Juventus and Real Madrid, but it’s not good enough and everyone seems to know it. Levy could easily prove us all wrong by bringing in Giovani Lo Celso and Ryan Sessegnon, but until new players are signed the mood won’t improve as Tottenham cruise towards a summer worse than 2018.
