Opinion: Tottenham’s end of season goal should still be clear despite woeful start to the season

|

It so often happens that a Premier League team’s position in the table can be deceiving, especially this early in the season. Tottenham fans find themselves in that exact position at the moment, although despite their poor start the end of season ambition shouldn’t change.

The Lilywhites will have gone into this season believing that getting into the top four was a foregone conclusion, especially seeing as they’ve done so for four consecutive years. However, the first 12 games of the season have not looked good for the north London side.

All signs, though, point towards the fact that the Lilywhites need to keep doing what they’re doing and they should end the season back up at the top end of the table, even if the form has been poor and they’ve won just three games out of 12 so far this season.

The table currently has Spurs in 14th, but given that there have been so few games this season, the Lilywhites find themselves just three points away from 5th placed Sheffield United, although the gap from the Blades to fourth-placed Manchester City is a larger eight points.

Looking at the top four, though, there is scope for Spurs to break in should they be able to pull away from the pack of teams between 5th and 16th who are separated by just four points. Leicester City are one of the sides who Spurs should almost certainly be targeted, and the xPts tally of the Foxes shows that.

Brendan Rodgers’ side have picked up 26 points this season, yet that is 8.18 points more than what they statistically should be managing (Understat), and it would be one hell of a feat should the Foxes keep up their levels of overperformance.

Is a spot in the top four still achievable?

Yes

No

Eventually, Spurs should revert back to what they’re good at and start picking up points, and should they manage to do so at the time that this Leicester City side starts to drop off then they could well find themselves replacing them in the race for the Champions League spots.
