Could Tottenham return for Wout Weghorst in January?

|

Tottenham’s pursuit for a striker saw them linked with Moussa Dembele, Danny Ings, Loren Moron, Wout Weghorst, Callum Wilson, Troy Deeney, Vedat Muriqi, Patrik Schick, Arkadiusz Milik, Robin Quaison, Rhian Brewster, Habib Diallo, Josh King, Ollie Watkins, Alexander Sørloth, Bas Dost, Willian Jose and Christian Benteke over the summer, but IBTimes say we were serious about signing Weghorst before settling for Carlos Vinicius.

We may not be done with Weghorst either. Football.London say Spurs could return for the 28-year-old when the transfer window opens, although VFL Wolfsburg sporting director Marcel Schaefer doesn’t believe we actually need him. Weghorst would improve our squad, but Schaefer might be right. Harry Kane, Vinicius and Heung-min Son are enough in attack.

Why did we fail to sign him over the summer?

An exclusive from the Daily Express suggested we had made an official approach for Weghorst, but Schaefer told the striker to reject us and no deal ever materialised. Arsenal and Newcastle United were also linked with the Dutch international, but he ended up staying in Germany.

Weghorst recently told Kicker (h/t Football Oranje): “The Premier League is still a dream for me,” so might a move happen when the winter transfer window opens. Personally, I don’t think we’ll return for him. Wolfsburg won’t want to lose a key payer midway through the season, and Weghorst won’t be guaranteed a starting place in North London with so much competition.

How much could Weghorst cost in January?

If we were to make a move in January, Weghorst wouldn’t come cheap. Wolfsburg paid only £9.45m in 2018, but his Transfermarkt valuation is £27m after scoring 41 goals and making 12 assists in 87 games across the board. CIES Football Observatory say Weghorst’s market value is €30m-€40m (£27m-£36.1m), which might be too steep for us.

Prediction?

I think we’ll stick with Vinicius rather than bring in another striker this season. It would be nice to have strength in depth, but Jose Mourinho would struggle keeping all his centre-forwards happy. Should we lose Kane or Son to injury, however, that may change.

Time will tell.

In other news, is Sergio Reguilon being linked with a move away from Tottenham already?
