Opinion: Tottenham would be smart to throw £20m at January target

|

Tottenham may not have signed a single player in summer 2018 or January 2019, but that doesn’t mean they weren’t linked to anyone. Back in January, they had links to a few players, and it would be worth revisiting one of those touted targets this summer.

The player in question is Championship ace and Hull City star Jarrod Bowen. Last season saw the Tigers’ winger bag himself a more than impressive 22 goals and four assists in 46 games in the English second tier. That form saw him linked with Tottenham (Sky Sports), although nothing came of the interest.

Now, a few months on, Newcastle have been linked with the £20m-rated midfield man, and Lee Ryder of The Chronicle recently claimed that the Magpies aren’t prepared to pay that £20 million asking price that Hull City have slapped on their impressive goalscorer’s head.

After such an impressive goalscoring season in the Championship, and at the age of just 22-years-old, he’s surely worth the gamble for Mauricio Pochettino and Tottenham. At his young age and considering the winger fills a homegrown quota, he’d be a great option for Pochettino.

According to Transfermarkt, the Hull man can play on both wings and up front, and that kind of versatility would make him a perfect Pochettino signing. The likes of Heung-Min Son and Lucas Moura are similar players, and Bowen would make a superb extra option.

Stepping up from the Championship to the Champions League is a huge step, although the Lilywhites could easily opt to do the same thing they did with Jack Clarke, loaning him back to the Championship for the season.

Having the pair of both Bowen and Clarke in the same Tottenham side from 2020 would be a dream for a lot of Spurs fans, and Pochettino could easily make it happen for a small fee of just £20m, which in the current transfer market is hardly enough to trouble Daniel Levy.
