Opinion: Tottenham won’t sign Barcelona man, club won’t make 67% profit, loan predicted

|

Despite Tottenham withdrawing their interest in Malcom in 2018 due to his £45m asking price at Girondins Bordeaux, the English and Spanish media are convinced Spurs are considering a £60m deal for the 22-year-old who is out of favour at Barcelona.

Tottenham were priced out of a move for Malcom last summer and eventually lost out to Barcelona. They’re unlikely to spend more on a player whose cachet has fallen in the last nine months too. Malcom has struggled for form and playing time at the Camp Nou and doesn’t represent value for money at £60m.

Barca paid £36m for the Brazilian international and are now looking to make a mark-up of 67%. It doesn’t make sense, as Malcom has spent the majority of 2018/19 out of the starting eleven. The former Ligue 1 forward has racked up just 608 minutes of playing time in La Liga this season, spread out over 15 appearances. He’d started only once in the league before April 2019.

Given Malcom’s forgettable season in Spain, it’s hard to see clubs paying £60m for his signature this summer. What’s could be more likely is a loan move with a buying option attached. It’s not ideal for Barca but allows them a chance to offload the 22-year-old if he impresses in 2019/20.
