Opinion: Tottenham still set to lose out if ace leaves for inflated price

|

Tottenham fans love Toby Alderweireld, and it looks like they should be set to keep him this summer. However, whilst his £25m release clause in his deal expires on the 26th July, Daniel Levy will still listen to offers around £40m, according to The Telegraph.

The Lilywhites won’t want to see their Belgian defender leave this summer, but should Harry Maguire stay at Leicester this summer and Manchester United cannot force a move through for the England man then it could see the Red Devils look towards the Tottenham man as a back-up choice.

Whatever happens, if Alderweireld remains in the Premier League he’ll be one of the best defenders in the league and Tottenham should be doing everything in their power to ensure that he stays at the club this summer and beyond that.

If Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs are to lose out on Alderweield, it looks like they’ll be set to get the £40m sum that Levy is now touting for him, but even that is an insult to the current ability of the Belgian, who is certainly worth more than £40m in a market that has Harry Maguire going for at least double that.

The only way that Tottenham don’t find themselves losing out on this one is if they manage to hold onto their 30-year-old, and it looks like that’s the most likely option after Sky Sports revealed that the defender expects to be at Spurs for the start of the season.

The only problem will be that next summer Alderweireld’s deal at the club is up and the fans will be set to wave goodbye to him for free, yet there will still be fan hope that he might put pen to paper on a new deal over the course of the season.
