Opinion: Tottenham star should be gunning for individual award after fast start

|

Tottenham fans, of course, would pick a trophy being won before seeing Harry Kane in the Premier League’s Golden Boot. However, that doesn’t mean that seeing one of their players pick up an individual award isn’t something to celebrate, and there’s one that the fans could see this season.

Whilst Kane will no doubt be gunning for the top goalscorer award this season, it’s not the one that we’re looking at when looking across the awards on offer. The Golden Glove also doesn’t look like an option for Hugo Lloris seeing as he’s kept just one clean sheet and has been injured for a long time.

That just leaves one award left, and it’s the relatively new Premier League Playmaker award. The individual honour is given to the player in the league who provides the most assists, and after Kevin De Bruyne registered eight assists in the first seven games (Transfermarkt), it looked like the award was his for the taking.

Since then, though, the Belgian has made just one more assist, meanwhile, Heung-Min Son has been quietly going about his business. The South Korean has managed seven assists for the Lilywhites in the Premier League, putting him 2nd in the running, and now he should be aiming for the Playmaker Award.

With the likes of Lucas Moura, Dele Alli and Kane buzzing around Son at the top end of the picture, there are plenty of options for Son when he gets the ball in the final third, so the fact he’s laying goals on for teammates will come as no surprise.

Is Heung-Min Son our best player?

Yes

No

However, with Christian Eriksen on his way out of Tottenham sooner or later and his game time dwindling this season, Son looks to be stepping up to fill the creative void, and if he can win the title of proving more assists than any other Premier League player this season, it’ll be a huge achievement.
