Opinion: Tottenham smart to ignore ex-target’s interest in a move

|

Tottenham and Wilfried Zaha have long been intertwined in news reports, with the club wanting the player and the Crystal Palace reluctant to let the attacker go. However, The Independent are claiming that the player is keen on leaving Selhurst park this summer and wants to leave for Spurs.

The Ivorian would cost a bomb as Palace reportedly value him at around the £80m mark, and Tottenham’s representatives are well aware of Zaha’s want for a move, yet they have no interest in making a move for the player. Whilst Zaha is certainly a talent, it makes complete sense for the Lilywhites to be keen to leave him be.

Everything about Zaha oozes class. He’s the ideal age for a Premier League player, contributed 20 goals and assists last season for Crystal Palace and has got it in his locker to decide games on his own. However, his price tag is frankly ludicrous.

Arsenal bowed out of the race for that very reason, Everton are bargaining at around the £55m mark (Sky Sports) and Tottenham obviously, and very smartly, aren’t prepared to get involved in a bidding war when the club selling are asking for ridiculous money.

The Lilywhites have already shattered their transfer record this summer by splashing out on Tanguy Ndombele in a deal that could be as high as £63m with bonuses (BBC). To then smash that again by over £15m to bring in Zaha makes no financial sense, especially when the club could be set to line up cheaper and more necessary deals.

Eventually, you’d imagine Zaha will get his wish and will be free from Palace and sign for a new club, but the fee required is only holding him back at the moment and making it very difficult for anyone to come in and sign him, as you’d imagine if Tottenham could grab the Ivorian for closer to £40m it might be a different story.
