Opinion: Tottenham shouldn’t sign Paraguayan international in January

|

Tottenham have been linked with Antonio Sanabria after passing up the opportunity to sign Barcelona forward Malcom, but it’s hard to see them signing the £26m striker as a result of his poor form this season.

Sanabria has scored just two goals in La Liga and has been in and out of the side as a result of his barren run. Tottenham surely have more prolific targets in mind than the 22-year-old so they may turn their attentions elsewhere.

With Harry Kane out of action until March and Heung-min Son away at the Asian Cup until early-February, a striker might be on Mauricio Pochettino’s list of priorities. Whether Spurs sign one is a different matter, however.

Fernando Llorente made a rare start in attack on Sunday against Fulham, but he’s been short of form for some time and looks out of place given Tottenham’s playing style. Vincent Janssen is nearing a return, but he’s been in even worse shape than Llorente. Pochettino doesn’t have a striker he can trust in Kane’s absence.

Sanabria is one of many centre-forwards likely to be linked with a move to Tottenham before the January transfer window comes to a close, but a £26m move for the South American doesn’t appear likely.
